Not bad but considering they dropped the price of the new ipods, I would be willing to pay another $50 to get the newer model. However at $200 for the 5gb that isnt bad (but I would be surprised if that lasts long as they have been in short supply for some time now and they certainly aren't getting any more).

doh...so many decisions...for $200, you can now get an old 5 gig iPod or the 20 gig Creative Nomad Zen...

can anyone tell me why you would opt for the 5gb iPod instead of the 20 gb Nomad Zen mentioned above? Is the iPod really that much better? If so, how?

things going for the iPod... size, weight, navigation...

even then the Zen has decent navigation/controls and it isn't much bigger or heavier. The Zen is clearly superior in sound quality though.

I didn't go with a zen because it is a bit bigger. I can drop my iPod into my back pocket. I don't need 20GB of storage and my PC didn't have firewire or USB ports so I picked up a firewire card for $13 and it works like a charm. By year end, we'll have itunes for PC but until then, Ephpod is a solid software solution. If I had to do it again, I'd go with the iPod but I'm not an audiophile.

New 10gig does not come with either a remote or carrying case. Size wise, they are all about same and feature havent' changed either. Overall, I am dissappointed with this whole new line up of iPod. They have very little extras compare to the old ones.

my problem with the new one is that goofy port on the bottom. I like standardization.. I can use a standard firewire port if i buy an old one. I can use a standard firewire cable to charge it and to plug into its way-cool charger. I'll probably buy an old 5gb version; then I'll upgrade when the divx/gt7/mpg4 color ipods come out.

Another benefit of the iPod over the Zen is that it was discovered that the iPod battery can be replaced by yourself (by buying the battery for ~$30 and installing it yourself through instructions), but I have not seen any methods in replacing the built-in battery in the Zen. These units will last for about 2 years, so once the battery starts to flaw, you'll have to get Creative to replace it for you (which'll cost money, not sure how much though).

Then again, there's still a lot of future players, and eventually maybe a company will release one where the battery is easily replaced, is compact, has great sound quality, is easy to navigate, and is not too expensive. There's even video players coming out. Music players ought to become very advanced soon. Someday the ideal MP3 player will come, so I'll have some patience for now..

Did some 'audiophile' tell you this or are you basing this purely on the size of the amp (100 mW vs 60 mW)? Several factors are going to have a hand in sound quality, and because I own both, I'd say I can't hear a difference, especially with mp3s.

How long will what last? Are you talking about the old iPods which SOLD OUT days ago?

As for the Zen. I reckon it is over twice the size (by volume) of the old iPod and about twice the weight. That's significant in my book.

I owned a 20GB iPod and 20GB Zen for a period of time to find out which i liked better. The Zen won me over. At twice the price, the iPod wasn't twice as good. The Zen actually had features that I liked more like on-the-fly playlists and dedicated volume buttons. Sure the iPod is easy to use, but it doesn't take a genius to use the Zen.

I have over 10GB of MP3's. If I'm going to carry around my collection of MP3's, I want to carry around all of them, not just 5GB or 10GB. That's why those were out of the question for me.

I wrote a detailed mini-review in a thread a while back. Search "zen" in the forum (maybe the archives) to read more on it.

The iPod is definitely overpriced in my opinion.
