Hey all, its been a while

I was recently asked to put together a low cost (hence the K6-2) barebones machine for a company of ours.

AMD K6-2-500
Jetway 531CF (ob Vid + snd)
128MB PC100
20GB Fujitsu ATA 100 5400RPM

From previous experiance I added case and exhaust fan.
The next day the PC shut itself down.... once rebooted the network was lost, and then came protection faults and Vxd errors .... (plus the exhaust fan had failed). To cut a long story short. I changed CPU's (assuming this was the problem) but this seems to have effected another chip (another K6-2-500) Which runs fine at 400MHz but NOT at 500MHz ...

My question(s):
Is it possible for the board (Jetway) to have damaged this new chip ?
Is it the board(s) that are damaged or the CPU's ?

Any help would be greatly received

Regards~

does that motherboard automatically detect the proper voltage or do you have to set it with dip switches? perhaps the voltage is set too high and the cpu's are getting damaged...or perhaps the voltage is set too low and it is causing instability. the correct voltage should be shown on the top of the cpu and it is probably either 2.2 or 2.4 volts

an afterthought...make sure all jumpers and switches are set properly...

Hi ledzepp98,

Thanx for the fast response

Yes the board is Jumper set and yes its at 2.2 volts (from the top of the CPU) ..... I've checked, checked and double checked the settings...

The thing is, The second chip I put in, to test (from another machine, oopsy) will only run (back in its original board) stable @ 400MHz. I've returned all the new components back to the wholesaler ...... but still leaves me with my chip I used for testing with .....

Is it because the CPU isn't being 'stressed' that Its running fine @ 400Mhz ??

Thanx~

Try using a better power supply. This happened to my k6-2 500 pc when I upgraded it with a 7200rpm 20GB hd. The computer just keeps shutting down after a few minutes. I solved it by getting a better power supply. Also make sure the motherboard supports the k6-2 500.
