Can anyone tell me which system this was originally designed for, PC or 360? I ask because I have been bitten by buying the wrong version before. It was very clear in Deus Ex 2, based on the controls (ie for cracking door codes) that it was made for one system and poorly ported (controls not corrected) for the other.

So which system was Bioshock "intended" for?

Well, if this truly is the spiritual successor to system shock, then it will be nothing like serious sam, and more intellectual and story based than deus ex even. I'm trying to avoid all plot references in reviews, so it's hard to say if it really is system shocky or not, but I'm guessing that it is.

Well thats a tricky question. From what I've heard it was originally designed for 360 and ported to the PC, however I have also heard that the PC version is very well done and optimized. Personally I am getting the PC version over the 360, I did the same with Oblivion and was very happy with my choice.

Just finished playing through the demo.
Graphics 7.5/8
sound 10
gameplay 8

The thing this game has going for is the atmosphere , the story.
The graphics are good but after playing the demo I can see clearly where cuts were made for the console.
There were a few areas /objects where you can see that they did low poly count. One is a scene where an enemy attacks swinging a hook and the hook is made up of about 6 sections making it look blocky. This game would have looked amazing if they had pushed the poly counts.
Another area where you can see the console influence is in the graphics options.
They are pretty limited and there is no option for AA. I guess those that want it will have to force it in the drivers.

The positives.
The sound is excellent. Probably the best I have heard in any game to date.
The atmosphere. It really makes you feel like you are beneath the water and nowhere is safe.
The story. Its got a great storyline so far and that alone for me makes it worth the cost of purchase.
There aren't many games besides rpg that come out with stories that make you want to see whats going to happen and they did a good job at that.

Graphically I wasn't wowed but all the other stuff more than makes up for it.

System used.
Pentium D 3.0ghz
2GB ram
7900GTX 512MB
windows xp sp2
played at 1280x1024

No framerate problems whatsoever.
Its fluid and the framerates seemed to stay high.

Wow thanks, do you think the retail version will differ in graphics options? I am going to buy it asap! probably even midnight tonight online for in store pickup. This is the first game I've been excited for since BF2.

After reading a few links there is no way to get AA in bioshock unless you use dx10 and even that may not work.
Apparently the engine used, Unreal Engine 3 does not support AA in dx9, its possible in dx10, but they haven't commented on if they supported that or not with bioshock.

Tim Sweeney: Unreal Engine 3 uses deferred shading to accelerate dynamic lighting and shadowing. Integrating this feature with multisampling requires lower-level control over FSAA than the DirectX9 API provides. In Gears of War on Xbox 360, we implemented multisampling using the platform's extended MSAA features. On PC, the solution is to support multisampling only on DirectX 10.

On my system, Lost Planet Dx10 (no overclock on the video) ran smooth with medium shadows and high everything else with 4xAA. Dx10 isnt THAT much more demanding... is it? I will see tomorrow!

Was Oblivion coded for the 360 originally as well?

Here;s some info on those drivers:

Just a few hours before the hot demo, NVIDIA released ForceWare 163.44 for Windows XP and Windows Vista, bringing improved compatibility for BioShock and PureVideo HD decode acceleration for GeForce 8600, 8500 and 8400 series GPUs (for Windows XP). These are beta drivers, but in case you wish to play the BioShock demo without any problems, then we'd recommend you install them, as we've heard there's a nasty problem on some configurations (with old drivers), which may cause the demo to crash. We've also added a list with the supported video cards, so be sure you check it before downloading the driver you need. You'll probably be happy to find out these drivers also fix the SLI BSOD problem.

I used the 162 version and the demo played fine, may just me an 8x00 issue.

There is still some 360 stuff lingering around.
I was looking through the ini files for game settings like the missing AA and found this .
IntroMovieXBox360="..\BinkMovies\2KG_logo_720P.bik"
; 5MB for now needs testing with final intro movie
IntroMovieBufferSizeXBox360=5242880

AttractMovieXBox360="..\BinkMovies\attractMovie.bik"

;; Use 20mb for attract movie; reduces DVD reads which allows more caching to the hard drive while
;; the attract movie plays
AttractMovieBufferSizeXBox360=20971520

There were two dev teams working on this game - one for the 360 and one for the PC.

I've read 7PM EST though I cannot confirm whether it is true or not.
