I can deal with the demo not running but the game better work.

I just did a clean install of the beta drivers linked to earlier in this thread. It did the same thing on my old 158.something drivers.

Gigabyte DS3R
750GB RAID 0
8800GTS 320
E6750
4GB DDR2 800
Vista HP 64 bit

Mine won't start either. I double click the shortcut OR the original exe in the install directory and I don't even get anything. The process isn't even running in task manager.

To be honest, Graphics on XBOX 360 version (with my 42 inch HD Plasma) looks better than PC version.

You've got to be joking. The 360 version is running at 720p.

Did you bother with DX10? The water looks amazing.

Here, couple of screen-shots from me ...

Example of blend textures contrasting with some better textures all around the Demo (and surely in the whole game as well): http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/7269/bio1qu8.png

Example of shiny texture, that's just one out of hundreds where you just have the feeling that Rapture is made out of humid plastic materials, some places it's "ok", but most surfaces are shiny while I would tend to believe they shouldn't, at least as far as "realism" goes. Even if we exclude reality and consider it's for artistic purposes then I say it's just too much of it even for that reason: http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/4489/bio2zi7.png

Another example of shiny textures, this time it's skins and blood that's shiny, not just walls or inert materials, that guy looks like a figurine, he looks like the plastic soldiers of FarCry: http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/5043/bio3vp4.png

An example of blend textures here, that's the kind of texture you could find in games like Halo or Halo 2. It has a lack of details, no signs of decay on the paint or scratched surface, or degradation from humidity all around Rapture (I'd presume so), just a gray texture with a couple of black lines and a shiny layer, voila: http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/5784/bio4ay2.png

Last example, here we can see what would logically seem to be dried blood (it ain't falling from the wall, I didn't blew any enemies nearby, it's certainly there since a long time), and it's so shiny that it just doesn't look like blood in the end, but more like well crafted red glass: http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9319/bio5hv7.png

Settings were: All in-game maxed, 1280x960, no A-A (doesn't work in DX9), and A-F is 8x but it doesn't make much of a difference so far (might also not be working in DX9 but I'm not sure), all drivers settings to High Quality, no optimizations enabled. Some screens ended up in 800x600, I don't know why, might have been Print Screen not capturing the whole screen properly, sorry about that, but I indeed played at 1280x960.

It does look really shiny.
Its almost as if they didn't use specular maps to control the light reflections.
I think they should have used bump mapping more in some areas as well.

I also found several spots where two textures meet and are not mirrored properly.

Yeah I know its nit picking but I do 3d texturing and I just naturally spot things like this.

Zenoth: is there any reason why you are calling them blend textures? Do you mean bland?

Then bland it is, sorry, English isn't my native language. If bland means "not much detailed" then so shall it be.

Wrong.

Those TV screenshots are not good at all and the game doesn't look like that on my hdtv. Now I use my hdtv for both my 360 and pc and I use 1280x720 for both and both demos looked pretty much the same. The only real difference is that the 360 seems to have some kind of AA while I cant use it on my pc (guess only dx10 cards can use it?). The 360 demo had a good steady framerate (30fps?) while on my pc it fluctuated quite a bit (from 20 to 60). My pc is hardly high end however (Opteron 165, 2gig ram, radeon x1800xt-512mb).

Of course those lucky folks with the high end pc's with DX10 cards who can jack up the res will enjoy superior visuals which is your point but those tv shots are busted.

Well it ran at 1600x1200 with max settings on my sys with no slowdowns or hitches. I played it in the dark with headphones on. Spoooky! I was worried with all the weapon/plasmid/tonic combos that weapon selection would be confusing. Rest assured, it's very simple and excellently implemented. Very much looking forward to the rest of the game.

Unfortunately, it's kinda short.

The game is better than I thought it would be. For some reason I thought it would be more RPG like, but that's alright, it's a good shooter.

From the brief demo, I can say one thing for sure: Andrew Ryan is a visionary. I for one, would like to join his utopia.

I can start Bioshock, but the mouse cursor doesn't show up so I can't even try to PLAY the game. I can't even exit the game without using control-alt-del.

I finally got it downloaded and installed, and while the game runs fine otherwise the sound crackles constantly. Does anyone else have this problem?

I run Bioshock on Vista x64 with no problems at all.

Oh but I did find something out... it seems Bioshock does not like to be minimized as it will then do exactly what you mentioned, go to a black screen with no mouse and must be forcibly closed.

I can minimize (alt-tab) out of BioShock without any issues using 162.50's. It minimizes fast to the Desktop, BUT it does take some time to come back to the game itself. There IS a black screen for about 5 or 6 seconds and then the whole game is back, no issues as if nothing happened.

I use WinXP. I don't get a black screen, I'm just unable to actually choose anything on the menu. I can hit escape or enter to bring up the "quit" box, but I can't select anything there either.

Since then I've installed the latest drivers (after running driver cleaner to ensure the old ones were gone after uninstalling them), run crap cleaner, and am running some new anti-virus programs (found about four viruses that my usual scanner missed).

We'll see if those steps fixed it when I get up tomorrow.

Those unable to get It running by clicking the bioshock.exe file in the install directory click the other one (has mch or something in the title). The plain .exe doesn't start the game (as I found when I first installed)

It runs more than fine with latest official NVidia drivers 168.22 on Vista 64bit. I use 7900GS and Q6600, 8Gig Ram. It kind of felt like System Shock 2 with different 'skin'. Turrets, hacking, Plasmids... They had to make it more of a shooter full of gore, as times have changed since SS1 and violence is a pre-requisite to sell games nowadays.
It was a great demo. Art Deco is done very well, sounds/music is amazing as it has been with SS1, SS2, and Thief... Graphics looks very good indeed, as it should for 2007.

I'm a little disappointed.

My X850XT PE will not run the game because it only supports up to Shader 2.0 not 3.0 that is used in Bioshock. This is a probably reason why many are seeing no mouse cursor or large black texture gaps or screens even after updating to the available Nvidia or ATI "Bioshock Drivers".

This (X850XT PE) is still a very capable card and having to upgrade ($$$$) to at least a mid level or higher newer card leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I understand that time marches on but the developers are walking themselves into a support nightmare by not making this issue clear enough.
