I was excited to play this based on the hype and reviews. I'd never played SS1 or SS2 and didn't know what to expect from the developers. All signs pointed to ZOMGWIN, including multiple 10/10's in reviews. Having played it, I didn't feel all that excited anymore.

If you're holding out on buying this game, exactly what does a game have to achieve for you to buy it?

I have to feel involved, I have to care about what's going on. I have to feel like I want to play this game for more than an hour and be enthused. I could easily wander through the full game shooting and collecting and whatever to get to the end, but I wouldn't want to pay top dollar based on my experience so far.

Some things I didn't like:

1) Atlas telling me where to go and what to do. Some exposition is required but I wasn't expecting to be ordered around. His accent grates too, just a personal preference.

2) Switching between plasmids and weapons. Why can't I hold a wrench and use plasmids with the free hand? Scale the plasmids down if necessary but one or the other is irritating.

3) Collecting money - I had no idea what that was for, then if memory serves me right, I got charged for doing the hacking game. That was weird.

It's nearly universally hailed as the second coming. You're allowed to disagree, but I wouldn't base my opinion of the game just on a 10 minute demo.
[/quote]

The second coming aura doesn't change how I feel. I played it for about 40 minutes, looking around every room and seeing what I could do with stuff, checking the view out of windows, killing enemies in different ways. It just didn't click for me in a big way.

Most likely because it has to be activated through the internet (Steam).

It's now tied to your Steam account. You'd have to sell your whole account.

I think the retail version and Steam use different authentication methods. The last statement I read said you couldn't register Bioshock CD keys with Steam.

It has to achieve the <$30 price range.

You will be waiting for a while, I bought it for $40

Maybe. Gogamer is usually pretty good at having a ~$30 sale a couple of weeks after release. If not, I'm content to wait. At least it'll be time for 2K to work out any bugs.

This thread is why I love AT. I would have purchased this game had I not ready some of the things here by the community.

Things I learned were:

1) No co-op
2) No True widescreen
3) No AA

Any game that is released without AA isn't ever going to be touched by me, that is a promise. No true widescreen? I can't forgive something like that. That is just shatty in every respect. Enough to ruin the game? No, but enough to make me think Bioshock is no better than EA. No co-op mode? If the game focused on single player, then at the VERY least, the game should have TCP/IP Co-Op play... I don't see what is so hard about adding single player co-op to a game. What do you really have to do except sync the games together? I don't see this as much of an issue. You match versions, if mismatch you cannot join, if the same version you just trade data for position or what not. You can have a global difficulty setting and so on. I just don't understand why they didn't include co-op for a game focused on single player. The same goes for HL2, though... I dunon, I shake my head in shame because PC's used to be known for co-op, now the only thing we ever get is deathmatch.

Well, Bioshock may be a great game and all, but they have fallen short in a lot of areas in my opinion. I don't believe the game is worth $40 and probably will wait for the game to hit the bargain bin. Even then I might pass it up until some of these issues are addressed (if ever).

Yeah, I didn't have steam on when I registered so it would have no idea whom I was.

As far as installing the full version, had the same problem as the demo. Load and played fine till the load screen after docking the bubble and then crash. Turn off hidef shaders and it works fine (this comp is also using onbaord reltek audio and haven't had a problem there)

Pass up, even from the bargain bin, what might be one of the best FPS games ever because no AA (not even visible at high resolutions and with alternative blend effect implemented), and no co-op. K.

Btw, no Unreal3 engine game has AA in DX9, so make sure you cross off about 30 upcoming games from your list, including Gears of War.

Can't wait for Crysis to come out so some people can say, "Eh, it's ok. But the crabs under water can move really fast. And everyone knows crabs don't move fast underwater. Clearly, this game sucks."

You're going way over the top, and exaggerating to try and make a point. Which didnt work. Crabs, and 30 games? Not even close.

No AA, and no true WS support is something to be upset about to him, and to myself too. No WS support in 2007? Are you serious? No AA? It just boggles the mind why they went backwards so many years in "features" that are very common place. AA much more so than WS.

You claim your cant tell in high res'. I play at 1920x1200, and I can tell. People who play at 1024x768 (have mercy on them) can probably use the jaggies as a stair master they are so pronounced.

To get AA you can force it in the drivers .
The games protection is Securom authentication server.
The same thing that adobe is using with there products.

I don't know what they are going to do with re-authorizing the game on a different pc.
According to securom your copy is locked to your pc.

With SecuROM? ?s Product Activation concept, Sony DADC offers software publishers the possibility to secure their content either distributed via the physical or electronic sales channel with one solution. Only legitimate customers who have purchased the product are able to unlock the program which is bound to the hardware after activation. This ensures that once activated, it cannot be transferred to another PC and therefore not being mass pirated. SecuROM? ?s Product Activation can be easily combined with Sony DADC?s n-CD solution. Let your end-customers register first and collect important market information prior allowing them to use your software products. See www.n-cd.com for more information.

As to 30 games utilizing U3, you are right. I was wrong. It's actually 40. As of now, so it'll only go up. You can wean that list some as by the time some games are released in '09, DX10 will be fairly ubiquitous, and some may be console only titles, not sure about the AA sitch there. But still, swearing off all U3 based games...big step.

Still, I got a little nasty for no good reason. My apologies.

I tried to run the hot fix from ati last night, it would not run saying that it couldn't find the driver and that i have a wrong OS (my drivers are older, and i am running on windows 2000).

So i tried to download newest drivers for my 1900xt, but when i tried to install those, it tells me i dont have the right OS(i remember i used to be able to use the XP drivers for updates, as they stopped providing updates for 2000, which sucks. But i guess now they have started includeing some kind of check to see if your running xp) so i'm basically screwed unless i upgrade to XP, which i dont really want to do.

Anybody have some insight into if i can get a new updated driver for a radeon 1900xt to somehow install on windows 2000, christ i want to play this game on the PC.

I by no means read this whole thread, so sorry if this was already concered.

What kind of performance are you 2900XT users getting at 1920x1200, DX10 and maybe some AA?

I almost got the game today at work, but I was torn between the 360 and the PC version. I would rather get the PC version since I can use Live! PC version is my preference, but if performance stinks with the 2900XT then I will save myself the annoyance and buy the 360 version.

Ive got Vista. And you shouldnt have to have Vista, DX10, and a DX10 GPU just to get AA.

And how many do you think he will want? Who knows. It certainly wont be every single game that uses the engine. How else does a person tell the companies he is not happy with what they did, than to not buy it? Look at Madden 08', so many flaws and bugs, and not much new. Yet they keep on stamping them out. Look at BF 2142, no WS support there either. Its just crazy to not have it.

Also, he didnt say he wouldnt get it. He said "I don't believe the game is worth $40 and probably will wait for the game to hit the bargain bin. Even then I might pass it up until some of these issues are addressed (if ever)." He said if the issues get addressed. And he may pass it up, not that he would.

There was NO mention of this in all the praising reviews. I probably still would have bought it, I can run my LCD at 1600x1200 instead. But the fact is, I shouldnt have to. Its 2007, this is supposed to be a "AAA" game, using a "AAA" engine. They dropped the ball on this, big time.

Well I just spent 1.5 hours playing it (bought on Steam).

The visuals aren't mind-shattering, but they are good. I personally like environments styled arond the 40's and 50's, so the setting is awesome to me.

The gameplay I think is what the developers focused on, and it's good. Many different weapons and powers, and a lot of ways to combine them.

I'm running on:

E6750 (stock)
8800GTS 320 (stock)
4GB DDR2 800
Vista HP 64 bit
1920 X 1080

At high settings, V-sync on, I was getting 40 FPS at minimum, around 55 average. I think they did a great job with optimizing it.

To those complaining about widescreen and FOV, come on, it's not like the game's unplayable. I had a blast and am not missing the vertical viewable area.

Wait, why are so many people confusing "widescreen support" with FOV? Do you think that your character magically has more peripheral vision when you have a widescreen monitor? Maybe they developed for widescreen and then extended the FOV for 4:3 monitors, since that's the majority? Who knows why, but a lot of people whine about this.

To be clear, I never said the game was crappy. I am sure the game is pretty good, though I wouldn't know since I have not played it. But I can tell you already that the game does not deserve the high scores it is getting with some of the issues that are plaguing it.

And, perhaps I am wrong on this, but I was under the impression the latest patch or R6:Vegas added AA support... If this is the case, then your statement is incorrect and UT3 games will (if patched or supported out the box) have AA.

Honestly, it doesn't matter to me if you love the game or hate it, I just wish some of these reviews would have mentioned the 'cons' along with the 'pros'... The widescreen issue I can live with, but the lack of AA I really can't. Once you go AA you never go back...
