I think anyone who purchased a retail copy locally, should bring their game and box back and claim the DVD was defective, get another copy and leave it un-opened for use later when you may need it.

that won't work. as you need the DVD in to play.

Right, so you would need to open the new one. Which is fine though, because the idea isn't to get a free game, but to protect a purchased product.

i'm on medium too. I've been beaten a fair number of times, mainly because I keep forgettin gthe hit F to recharge my health. I think they should have made it automatically use a health pack when you hit bottom rather than have to hit F in the middle of a fight. They did it with the Plasmid Hypos, why not health?

Not sure if this helps or not, but someone posted this on the HardOCP forum on this same issue:

User Access Service
SecuROM? will install a Windows? service module called "User Access Service" (UAService) on your system. This is a standard interface commonly used by several other applications as well. It is no spyware or rootkit at all. This module has been developed to enable users without Windows? administrator rights the ability to access all SecuROM? features. Please be assured that this service is installed only for security and convenience purposes. Since it is a standard Windows? service, you can stop and delete this service, like any other Windows? service. If deleted, the access for non-administrator users to SecuROM? protected applications will be affected.

Important Additional Information
Several systems are said to use a root kit based DRM that makes it possible for viruses or other malicious programs ("malware") to use the root kit to hide content on a user's PC. In this way, a virus or other malware may remain undetected, even if updated anti-virus software is installed. Please note that SecuROM? does not use any root kit technology in its implementation.

So it installs an additional service if you are retarded and don't run XP with admin privilages, and the main part of the system isn't technically a rootkit apparently. Rootkit revealer didn't find it when I scanned my PC so I can believe that.

I am still buying the game tonight...quite honestly, this whole SecurROM thing is turning into a witch hunt, or perhaps a means by which some people will justify their decision to pirate the game.

And we wonder why developers continue to turn their backs on PC gamers.

Is man not entitled to the game he buys?

NO, says the man at Securom. It belongs to 2K.
NO, says the man at 2K. It belongs to us.
NO, says the man at Microsoft. It belongs to our license purchasers.

I rejected those answers.

Instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose...piracy! Where the gamer would not be censored, where the PC owner would not be bound by petty encryption, where the buyer would not be constrained by corporate greed. And with the downloading of your torrents, piracy could become your salvation

Stole it from the 2k forums.

there is no justification for piracy.

you wan tthe game then buy it. IF you don't want to put up with 2k's bullshit then do not buy the game.

those that already have purchased it should be able to get refunds.

How people who pirate games justify it shouldn't really be a concern. I just felt that was an amusing parody of the speech you get in the submarine. There are still going to be a lot of people who refuse to buy it flat out due to these, which should be a concern, and I'm sure of those a number of desperate people will actually be driven to piracy, but I suspect their numbers are small. People who refuse to purchase and people who pirate incur the same financial loss to the company.

I was seriously thinking about getting the game, but 3 things stopped me. 1: I was low on funds when I was tempted to preordering it 2: It's single player only and gives me about the price/entertainment ratio an afternoon movie gives me (I don't go to the movies either) 3: Crazy DRM and rootkits. I don't much care for stuff that gets hidden away on my computer and never removed even with the uninstalling of the software I paid for.

How does this game run on Vista64?
Also, is there any multiplayer to the game? Or just a single player campaign.

Right now I see 192,000 people pirating the 360 version at my favorite torrent site.

Most stores will not give refunds on opened software. Publishers are thieves; they dishonestly sell a faulty product with a rootkit, and the stores won't give you your money back.

Runs fine,I'm using Vista x64 to play the game and not had any crashes yet, FPS will depend on your hardware and graphics settings.

Single player.
