All I can say is that my experiences with the Vegas port do not mirror yours. You know it's a sad state of affairs when some practically standard video settings are not included in the initial release.

Lost Planet's DX10 features are really only performance enhancers. Better shadows and light but both are extremely trivial. And the performance gain is also pretty trivial, something like 2fps. Company of Heroes, on the other hand, has a decent list of DX10 features, but even then the end result isn't very big and it costs you a lot of performance.

Granted, the obvious reason to go to Vista is that it is unavoidable and stalling it/complaining just shows a lack of planning.

[or] You haven't tried the latest LP patch have you?

it looks like you may only have the demo - if that ... the full version has been patched to look a lot better than the DX9 version ... motion blur is not available in LP's DX9

My only experience with DX10 is Company of Heroes. The game does look nicer but it takes a huge performance hit. And by nicer I mean, better lighting and better particles, as well as slightly better textures. But often I have to hunt for the DX10 on the screen. It doesn't hit you in the face.

It's not z0Mg better, if you know what I mean; I still debate whether I should run the game in DX10 (looks nicer but I average 45fps with no AA @ 1680x1050 and can get really sluggish at times) or DX9 (where I get over 75fps with 4xAA and never really gets sluggish).

I am SO sick of hearing this dumb shit.

How much of the DX10 technology will you be using for water effects?

JJ: All the water effects in the game were developed to work on both DX9 and DX10 technology. Where applicable DX10 is used to accelerate the performance of some of the effects, and this may allow more detailed water in some areas.

Please show me another stated feature that exclusively uses DX10 in this game. I can't find anything else.

I'd have to wait and see games that remarkably better looking and better performing to just up and drop some serious cash for VISTA.

Now THIS is a perfect example of magical thinking. DX10 isn't going to deliver the truly MASSIVE increase in visuals that "someone" gulled you into thinking it would. It just ain't going to happen, you've "heard." However, you're going to wait until it does.

Stay with XP, and consider being quiet about it.

I believe each version (XBOX and PC) were developed independently by different dev teams..........hope I said that right.

Yup. You get hauled for making the usual "I hate Vista/DX10/MS because... well just because!" and now you want to fall back on tech-talk that you can't possibly throw ANY weight behind. Look pal, if all you can do is spout like you're some sort of game insider about what you've "heard", you can just save it.

Wow, being civil is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO difficult.

You're a baby.

XP+DX9.0c is the way to go.

For you, that's fine. I don't care what you use, you should "civil" enough to extend the same.

Microsoft already announced that they will put out another OS in 3 years time. So frankly VISTA is just a road bump I can avoid.

By then Vista will be a nice stable gaming OS and the new OS will be like Vista now.

Basically I'll have plenty of options in 3 years time and if it get's delayed 2 or so years no biggie by then SP3 or 4 for VISTA will be out. As of right now I see no big reason to run out and buy VISTA especially since they have yet to release a service pack. I got time to kill before I see it as a must and even then I'll probably have a choice to skip it and leap frog VISTA if I like.

November? Thought the game was due August 21

Plus according to Levine, the PC demo will be released before the release of the actual game...which should mean later this week, hopefully by Friday.

Gamespot hands-on BioShock

I'm really hoping that there isn't as much fiddling with stuff as there was with System Shock.

That's weird. They said they played the 360 version but it's in the PC games section? Also, there's inaccuracies in the review itself, or at least contradictions to what I've witnessed in my own experience with the 360 demo. I have yet to see an enemy in the 360 demo wield plasmid powers nor have I found telekinesis for myself. The screenshot on the second page is flipped, I think; the left hand should handle plasmid powers. In addition, this game can't to them feel like it has System Shock 2's controls because they're playing the 360 version. The demo made me fight almost everyone, so there is no Deus Ex kind of freedom, as Gamespot may suggest. Finally, they're stretching the similarities to System Shock 2 a bit. Bioshock lacks System Shock 2's extensive inventory system, though I don't believe weapon/plasmid/gene tonic customizability will be compromised.

So to answer your question, at least for the 360 version, everything (the stuff, as you say) should be pretty streamlined, in my experience.

Wow, you do have a good eye for detail. I hope you're right about the game-induced fiddling. System Shock 2 was okay and all, but it was just too busy for my tastes.

No; the 360 version was developed by 2K Boston (formerly Irrational).

2K Australia then ported the game to PC. But technically it was just one team. The game was already complete by the time 2K Australia got it; they just adapted the HUD and optimized it (hopefully) for PC.

GameTrailers clip with PC version footage

Wish it were better, wish there was more info re: what it was running on, all we can tell from that is that it was running on a WS 24".

What I can tell you, from what I've been soaking up:

-UI/Inventory is much more streamlined than in SS2.

-You can disable the "loot glint".

Don't know anything about moddability. 2K has been mum about whether they'll release modding tools.

I've been waiting patiently for this one. Hope it lives up to its pedigree.

Update - PC Demo coming on the 18th - looks like it's a File Planet exclusive

(Fileplanet FTL) but keep an eye on NZone too

When I was watching a report on the 360 demo they said the PC version was scheduled to be released 1 week later.

I have a 8800GTX and just pre-ordered BioShock. Would it be worth my money to upgrade to Vista to run this game in DX10? Are there any DX9 vs. DX10 screenshots of this game yet?

I reserved it last night, it says friday the 18th, which isnt evena real date for this year, the 18th is Saturday. Also, the game does come out the 21st, its already gone gold as far as I know so its not going to be delayed either. I'm not sure if I want to play the demo 3 days before the full game is released, but I want to see how well it runs on my PC.
