If you are employed checkout Microsoft's Work at Home program (I believe that is what it is called) via your employer (heavily discounted Microsoft software, if your company is a member). If you are a student, checkout the MSDNAA program to see if your university is a member, I got Vista business (amongst other Microsoft software)for free through it.

Or make a friend at MS and get Vista Ultimate for $45?

You can, but practically speaking, most won't/don't. If you're using a 50+ screen, you're most likely sitting on a couch, and quite frankly, a gamepad is more comfortable to use (for most) in this set up. And why would I use a PC to play Bioshock, when a $350-$450 360 plays it BEAUTIFULLY. To use a keyboard/mouse? Whoop da dee do. I've played PC games forever, and Bioshock plays great with the gamepad and like I said, it looks absolutely GORGEOUS (Better than any PC game out to date. I don't care how good your rig is.). No need to tie myself down to a PC (typical monitor keyboard/mouse setup). And don't give me this, "what makes you think a PC can't run on a 50" plasma." It can, but a 360 can also run on a 24" Dell LCD, but that's not the typical set up. Most people buying the 360 version have a HDTV or SDTV. Most people buying the PC version will have a typical PC monitor/PC set up. So let's not start throwing in "exceptions to the rule" in the argument. If you're using a $2000 PC to play Bioshock and hook it up to a nice plasma, well that's good for you. I've got a $450 360 Elite that looks just as good (or better) and plays liquid smooth. Oh yeah, and I've already played the demo. How did the PC version look on an HDTV? Oh sorry, I forgot. It's not out yet for the PC. Sucks for you.

Couple of new very good reviews,Eurogamer.

BioShock is the ultimate rarity: not only does it live up to its lofty promise, but exceeds it through simple, old fashioned talent and imagination - not to mention verve, style, class, wit, and sheer bloody-minded ambition. It takes the tired, worn-out FPS genre by the scruff of the neck, reinvents and bend it out of shape in such a breathtaking fashion that it's going to take something very special to top this in the months and years ahead. For a game to be so outstanding in one department is one thing - to manage to tick every single box from graphics to audio to gameplay depth to atmosphere and innovation is pretty much unprecedented. Seriously - if you don't find something to love about BioShock, we'd recommend a trip to the nearest doctor to check if your heart's still beating.

10/10

I have pre-ordered my copy .

Short review but another 10/10.

This is the really bewildering thing about it: it succeeds so stunningly on three different fronts. Not esoteric ones, either, these are the big challenges developers have been struggling to master for decades: narrative, emergence, a sense of place. If another game did just one of these as well as BioShock, it would immediately qualify as a classic. When a game comes along that does all three, we can only be baffled and thankful.
.

Btw MODs this old thread of mine is in software for Windows for some reason, feel free to move it to PC gaming if you wish, guess with the new AT forums some old threads got misplaced to different forums.

The only reason I'm whining is because my POS 360 died last wednesday because it can't handle the heat from dvd playback apparently. It wasn't even in an entertainment center, it was in the open in air conditioning, its pathetic. The platform might have some awesome games for it but the thermal design is total crap, its the most pathetic cooling system I have ever seen, it looks like they took the GPU heatsink off of a pentium 2. Anyway, good to hear they're not completely ignoring their PC fanbase, because it seems like it will pull in a lot of sales for them.

Totally OT, but I didn't realize my school was an MSDNAA member. I can get Vista Business, Office 2007, and OneNote 2007 for practically nothing. Not bad!

As for Bioshock, uh, wouldn't bother with DX10, unless they're really dialed up some of the effects without killing performance.

I don't know about you, but I've yet to see the XBOX 360 produce better graphics than my PC. If you actually look at the 360 graphics, you'll notice that there's very little in the way of smoothing features enabled (i.e. Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering). XBOX 360 produces lower resolution than my PC (1280x720 vs 1650x1080) and can't even do it with the goodies turned on.

The thing is... no one sits close enough to a TV to notice the jaggies, but you definitely sit a lot closer to a computer monitor and usually they're more apparent.

I'm still a bit up in the air as to what I want to get. Normally games come out for the 360 first, so I just buy those ( and never play them ), but this comes out on the same day. I know I'm going to get annoyed with trying to thumb around the damn reticle, as I've proven in Gears of War, Lost Planet, Stranglehold and Bioshock that I absolutely suck with a controller, yet even way back in Quake III, I could snipe you with a rail gun from all the way across the map (given a good open map... Q3DM17!).

No, I haven't forgotten it but judging by this thread, there are some people here that miss it.

I know about epic and the MS mod anouncement.
Thats just one game .

And even then, who wants to work on a mod that has to pass MS scrutiny.

You didn't read Aikouka's link did you? MS is setting up a system where publishers can host mods on their own servers. Does not have to pass MS scrutiny. This will affect every game where a publisher/dev takes advantage of that system. So, the only question will be, how many will take advantage of the system.

Yes , like I said I know about the announcement.
Hell I was there when they made the announcement.
I attended because of the XNA information regarding softimage XSI and the mod tool.
I try to make it to all the cgi related stuff as thats my line of work.

The problem with the announcement is the paperwork.
In it , its clearly stated that MS has final say over what can and cannot be hosted, thats part of the 360 licensing that any company who publishes for the 360 has to accept.

All the announcement does it take the burden off MS of having to approve each mod and place that burden on the license holder.
Its great in theory, but still not as good as the pc world where anyone can release any mod they want.

And what does any of this have to do with bioshock anyway ?
Have they announced they are supporting mods for bioshock on the 360 ?

I just got the press release from Valve:

PRE-PURCHASE 2K GAMES' BIOSHOCK VIA STEAM® NOW

NEW YORK, NY, August 16, 2007 - Valve today announced that BioShock, the highly-anticipated and award-winning first-person shooter by 2K Games is available for pre-purchase now via Steam®. Starting today, gamers can pre-order BioShock on Steam (www.steamgames.com) for $49.95, and begin playing the moment the game is made available.
One of the most anticipated games of 2007, BioShock is the "genetically enhanced" first person shooter that lets players do things never before possible in the genre - turn everything into a weapon, biologically modify your body with plasmids, hack devices and systems, upgrade weapons and craft new ammo variants, and experiment with different battle techniques.
Gamers enter the game as a cast-away in Rapture, an underwater Utopia torn apart by civil war. Caught between powerful forces and hunted down by genetically modified "splicers" and deadly security systems, players have to come to grips with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating characters. No encounter ever plays out the same and no two gamers will play BioShock the same way.
"Over the next six months, gamers will be hit with a barrage of highly-anticipated titles," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "The lion's share of these great new releases will be PC games. And with the gameplay and graphic innovations featured in BioShock, it promises to be one of the most important games released in 2007."

BioShock is currently scheduled to be available via Steam and at retail on August 21 in the U.S. and August 24 in Europe. For more information or to pre-purchase BioShock, please visit www.steamgames.com

Ahhh I see, you Download now, and then you can play it the second it's made available. Good idea.

This should probably be in PC gaming though.

I have it "reserved" as well, and is sitting in my taskbar at home waiting. I'm thinking they will release it this weekend, at least that would be nice. Like some of you, I only want to gauge how it runs on my X1950. I played through the 360 demo, but I was missing my m/k as I'm just not a fan of thumbsticks for FPS's. I think I'm going to reserve the collector's edition for this one, as I never do, and the big daddy will look great on my desk. hehe
