I don't believe it is required. Steam is just being used as one of the distribution methods. It is available on Direct2Drive as well.

I don?t understand something with steam. Do you get a hard copy ever in the mail? Why isn?t there a discount when they are saving a crap load on making the physical boxed game, and distribution? I bet this game will be for sale at fry?s for 39.99 the day after it comes out.

Because it's better for the developer. You can't resell the game and they get 100% of the profit because there's no packaging. You can burn a copy if you want, but it only works with your account. A lot of gamers hate it, but it's going to keep PC gaming alive, so I support it.

You do not get a hard copy of the game. Also, the Steam program must be running in the background for many of their games, although you can tell it to stay in "offline" mode if you wish.

mmm... since I pay no New York taxes for steam games, transportation costs (since there are like..no freakin decent places to buy pc games in the Bronx) and of course shipping it looks like Steam is the best and cheapest option.

If I can't find it for cheaper by monday night I think Steam may be the way to go for me. On top of that its more convenient and I won't need a disc to play.

Steam is getting better and better.

Just don't see why they charge the same amount when they are going to save so much by it being downloaded, it just seems wrong. Im fine with the ideal of just downloading it, I just want to see the savings passed down to us.

The fact is, Bioshock, whether on PC or 360, looks good. To start arguments about AA/AF/etc. and looking closely to find those features is rather pointless. If it looks good to someone, it looks good. We don't need anyone to come over and tell us "No it sucks because this/that/etc." Doubtless that Bioshock on 360 will look good enough and perhaps better for anyone interested in the gameplay. Those with powerful PC setups will, of course, be lucky enough to get slightly better looking games in one form or another.

There are still costs involved with distributing digitally. Probably not as much as retail but I'd think it is somewhat substantial when you take into consideration the space, bandwidth costs, and distribution rights. I have no idea how big the difference might be though.

That's awesome. I haven't bought a game in a long long time. Bioshock looks great though. I think I'll pick it up on stream. So easy and convenient.

Another reason is publishers also don't want it to be cheaper because they don't get paid if people buy it online. I remember that HL2 was required by the publisher to be the same price online as it was retail.

Personally I like steam a lot. I'd rather be able to download the games anywhere than have to carry cds everywhere.

Sadly, the same has been assumed to happen when advertising becomes much more prevalent in games, but it never will. It's a multi-billion dollar industry, it's all about the money. Savings in cost will never be passed down when using cheaper distribution or off-setting costs via in-game advertising, whether we like it or not. Take Madden 08, for example, which bombards you with Snickers, Under Armour, and Sprint ads just by playing a single Play Now game, and that's before you go into the franchise mode. Unfortunately it still costs $60 on the 360 and PS3, even though they've obviously made a crapload of money from repeated advertising in a game that's played numerous times over and over by millions of people.

Oh crap, it's on Steam! Bioshock on my 52" HDTV and digital surround, or simply download it through Steam..... choices, choice.

On one hand, I'm lazy, on the other hand, it won't look near as nice on my PC as it does on the 360.

I've never bought from steam but would you at least save on tax? Do they still charge it? I'd consider buy this if only I had a 8800 series card. I just think my 7900GT is gonna choke even near the settings I like to play at.

I'm still waiting to see what the big deal is about this demo. It was said when the 360 came out that the PC would be out within a week.

Nope, and I'll always wait till I can just pick up a hardcopy from the store. No having the d/l and then creat my own disc and crap.

I want to play a PC demo first. It looked very cool on the 360 but FPSs just aren't the same compared to a good PC rig. I listened to a developer podcast recently and it sounded to me as if they also preferred the PC version mentioning that it takes 'forever' to aim properly on a gamepad.

In fact, I find it more stable and faster than XP, but thats just me I guess.

Not all drivers fix the problems yet. Bad drivers result in bad vista.

Ooo, that means the demo will be available on steam when it's released. No waiting in server queues =
