from what i've read, bioshock only REALLY uses dx10 to enhance its water features. if you really want pretty water, go for vista, but otherwise i'd say save your cash.

From most everything I've seen on DX10 hype... unless it's a DX10 "Exclusive" game (ie: No DX9 support or OpenGL support), then the visuals and performance are nearly identical between DX9 and DX10.

Cost being the primary concern and not just the trouble of upgrading....

If you are employed checkout Microsoft's Work at Home program (I believe that is what it is called) via your employer (heavily discounted Microsoft software, if your company is a member). If you are a student, checkout the MSDNAA program to see if your university is a member, I got Vista business (amongst other Microsoft software)for free through it.

I hate you

I can get office for $20 but Vista is like 1/3-1/2 off price.

I can only get Office applications that are not included in the base office package for free. For example, I have to pay full price for Microsoft Office 2007 Academic Edition (like $120), but I can get the latest versions of Access , Visio, Groove, OneNote, Microsoft SharePoint Designer, etc. for free.

Anyway, I hope that my post above helps you save some cash, OP.

Me too

Even my parents, nearing 60 years old, who don't like change, have adapted to Vista with ease.

I think the game is hitting the shelfs on the 24th of august, and that the demo will be out before the 21st.

Who cares what date it says, we know it's an incorrect date; probably one put into the system from before the actual dates were published.

Its a real date: April 18th, 2008

Guess I didn't look at it close enough last night lol. I wonder why they always put crazy dates for file reserves on there, I guess they don't want the real date for the demos leaking out.

GameTrailers clip with PC version footage

Wish it were better, wish there was more info re: what it was running on, all we can tell from that is that it was running on a WS 24".

And it's also a bit choppy

It was??!! Guess I'm blind because that framerate looked smoother than the 360 demo I played.

It's a third-person view of someone playing a first-person game. The source image is compromized so much that it's pretty worthless to compare it graphically with the 360 version. It doesn't seem to look worse than the 360's version at any rate, as far as anyone can tell. That's pretty moot though, demo is coming soon, right?

The devs have already answered to the whines of the PC fanboys and said the demo would be released for the PC before the release of the game, which is next Tuesday, the 21st. If you need proof, check any of the major game site's news sections. Please refrain from incendiary comments, it will result in your posting privileges being suspended-DAPUNISHER

Sounds like I'll be holding off.. I've used Vista, the new features aren't something I need/want for now, so I guess unless BioShock has a lot of water in it...

My company has no such programs, so I'd have to pay full price.

Bioshock takes place under water, so yeah there is alot of water.
From the demo, there is water basically everywhere.

Would be nice to see what the DX10 water looks like.

heh.. See how foolish I am with my money? Pre-ordering games I know little about just because everyone I talked to was blown away by the demo =p

I <3ed that when I went to FIT. I can't get operating systems for free anymore though : ( Not that I'd use vista even if it was given to me.

demo rocked the house. I can't wait for the PC demo as the 360 version on a 57' HDTV in 5.1 was heaven.

The 360 sucks balls, and if you get a 360 game, you need to be shot for plain dumbed down crowd mentality.
Sure it does geek. Have fun playing your PC version on your sh!tty PC monitor. I'll take the 360 and a 50"+ 8G Pioneer plasma instead.

Yep from 2kgames bioshock forum FAQ:

Will there be a playable demo before the games release?
A playable demo for Xbox 360 is available at Xbox Live. A PC demo is about to come. The developers try to make it available before release.

Cause d00d we all know that PCs can only run on PC monitors and those are never bigger than 24"

I sometimes run my PC on my 106" Front-Projector. Looks awesome.
