A Lesson to be Learned

BioShock is one of those games that goes down in history as a shining example for other developers to learn from. The massive amount of effort that's gone into creating great architecture and environment goes beyond what many game developers are even remotely capable of, and while I'm not trying to trash other successful shooter franchises, the RPG elements in BioShock give the action a level of depth you simply can't get in games like the Halo series or Gears of War

96% rating.

But they never do.

Still not sure on what to get... any idea on how much the limited edition copy will be there?

EDIT: As a note, I read their ad just now and the XBOX 360 game is also $10 off. I also don't recall Circuit City ever selling limited editions of games, so they probably won't have Bioshock's either.

My FilePlanet Download Manager is downloading it now! Too bad it'll be locked until 7pm tomorrow. I almost hate to install it since I'll be picking the game up the next day.

So...first, we get the demo one week late. Then, it's only on FilePlanet, only for subscribers...and we have to wait until they 'unlock' the demo? What a load of crap.

I won't bother with it; already got the game on Steam anyway; waiting one more day won't kill me and I already played through the 360 demo a couple of times.

The demo should be mirrored far and wide before long. I'm not sitting in line at File Planet or giving them $ just to DL one demo either. Check on nZone, they have a page for it.

Edit - Apparently a File Planet subscription just allows a preload. Folks over @ 2K forum with FP subscriptions just had their demo downloads start running. I guess it unlocks somehow @ 7 PM EST on Monday.

Oh, and it's 1.8 GB in case anyone's wondering.

Yep, just finished the fileplanet download.
It now says waiting for key to unlock.

Fileplanet can really suck with all this exclusive crap.
I wouldn't pay for it and I hope companies start to realize that they are just hurting themselves when they try to make things fileplanet exclusives.

I get it free (FilePlanet, IGN Founders Club, GameSpy) through Comcast Game Invasion- you have to be subscribed to the 8Mbps service. I don't even know if they offer the Game Invasion anymore.

There's two things I want to know about that game ...

1) Are the enemy numbers, types and spawning locations along with their "patrol" paths entirely scripted ?

Example: In Half-Life 2, in sections that are irrelevant for story-line and just focused on playing around with the physics or just overall action, you will ALWAYS play against the same number of enemies, at the exact same locations, they will also always use the same weapons against you. There is NO variety, no unpredictability whatsoever. And that's not just the case with H-L 2 but so many others around, if not almost all of them. It's like a book, or a movie. Nothing is different, everything is the same, when you play it for the 2nd, or 3rd time. In other words, there's no point.

2) How long is it ? And is it linear ?

I've heard that Rapture is separated in seven sections and that they load separately. That's cool ... I guess, but are they loading linearly ? Is it like "Level 1", then Level 2, Level 3 and so on, that you're FORCED to take the same route each time, just like Doom back in 1990's, or do we have a MINIMUM amount of freedom of movement within Rapture ?

Example: By "minimum amount of freedom" I could give an example with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s "Zones" (a.k.a levels). There is ten Zones, and when you start, of course, without a problem there, you start at Zone 1 (Cordon). Then, logically (but linearly) you HAVE to go to Garbage (a.k.a Level 2). BUT ... once you're in Garbage you CAN, technically, without any restrictions (although no without risks due to Radiation) go to the Dark Valley (Level 4) OR Agroprom (Level 3). So, it's not entirely, not 100% linear. Ideally you SHOULD go to Agroprom first, but ... well, you get the point ? That's a minimum amount of freedom, even though the Zones in question are quite small and limited by fences not even a meter high that the brutal mutants can't seem to destroy or just jump over, but that's another story.

So, any enlightenment on those two subjects regarding BioShock would be immensely appreciated. So that I know if I'll have to buy an evolution in FPS gaming, or just a linear well-crafted but déjà-vue shooter that's predictable in every sense of the word.

Oh. Em. Gee.

:Q

People, you gotta check this out. I don't care how many videos you've seen. Download this demo ASAP. I'm not sure what the mods' idea of protocol is re: this thing, but the link to the torrent is still there for you to see as of this post (I'll be adding some drops to the bucket over my whopping 768K upstream until 7pm EST), and you can now also try Softpedia.

Well, start downloading. WTF are you waiting for??

OK, now that that's out of the way.

UE3 is a bit too... harsh. Things look too shiny and sharp for an Art Deco Utopia built in the late 40s. Maybe there's a way to reduce the effect; I could really do for a "soft lens" POV to add to the atmosphere.

That's not really that big of a bitch. That and the sprites for splashing water are the only things I can complain about graphically. Well, that and a bit of mouse lag. I'm still running ForceWare 100.87, so take that into consideration. I also, for some reason, can't adjust prerender frames in RivaTuner right now, and that may be set too high - that probably has an effect on mouse lag. It should be set to 2, but for some reason I can't access that setting at all for the moment.

The SOUND. How many of you played the original Thief: The Dark Project? Ventured down into The Bonehoard? Had the background ambience, the distant call of the Horn of Quintus plus the up-close moaning and groaning of the resident zombies all going through your ears at the same time? Same thing here, circa 2007. Aurally, there's a lot going on at multiple levels. I'm using an X-Fi with a pair of Senn HD595, and the positionality and balance seems just about dead on with all levels of sound FX.

I can't really spend much more time posting right now.

For fuck's sake, GET THIS DEMO. Now. Whichever way you can.

This actually, possibly, could be something special.

Is Bioshock going to run on my x800XT? It's better than the minimum specs, but an earlier generation. I head that it may require SM 3.0, leaving my card out.

Well, I decided to order a cheap X2 for my aging 939 motherboard. Only $65 or so. Not bad. Should I bother playing bioshock with my single core? Maybe some ATers would want to know how it fares? I've got an opteron 144, 2gb of ram, and a 7800gt currently.

While the trailers look very impressive, the gameplay concerns me a bit. I was hoping more for a Deus Ex type experience, rather than a Unreal/Serious Sam monster fest. Perhaps the trailers are just showing all the action and there is more to it than kill baddie, reload, repeat. Anyone give me any feedback who has played either demo?

Don't worry so much, read the reviews and then play the demo. Dont' talk yourself out of it before getting to play for yourself

Awww man. I almost peed myself during those scenes. SoundBlaster Live! 4.1 FTW.

7300LE FTL though No BioShock for me until I upgrade.
