I downloaded the demo just fine from fileshack.

Unrared like normal, installed typical. When it is finished I unchecked "run bioshock", "dl new drivers" etc...

When I go to the start menu or into the program files and execute the .exe it errors with:
"This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application my fix this problem."

I have reinstalled every way possible, same problem everytime.

System AMD3000+ 7900gt 2gb ram Windows XP SP2. DX9.0c Nvidia 162.18 WHQL

Anything I can do?

I'm crashing on exiting the load screen of the sphere entering the city.

When the MS error box comes up if I select report the error my entire system will get hung, don't send just lets bioshock close.

Download the Bioshock demo through Steam.. your fileshack download might be corrupt. That's really my only other guess.

DirectX 9.0 GRAPHICS: 7/10

Not impressive at all, perhaps due to the XBOX360's limitations (which is quite surprising to me). However I've seen much worse before in supposed-to-be recent games like F.E.A.R. when it was released. Most of the textures are blend, almost void of details. One out of tens of examples I could give is when you first enter the lighthouse after the plane crash, before, or after the doors close behind you, just look at the ground texture, it's literally reminiscent of textures I could see in early XBOX games (and I do mean the original XBOX, not 360).

And yes I play with everything maxed, at 1280x960, 95hz, no drivers optimizations, textures at High Quality in CP. It's just blend. And a lot of surfaces are just shiny when there is no logical reasons for it to be shiny ... like Doom 3 for example, like "plastic" surfaces, as if water was on the surface constantly. In my book, and to my eyes that kind of "over-artistic" decision for textures can decrease the efficiency of the atmosphere and situation's believability. And as mentioned the polygon counts seem low on many models, especially "props" lying about on the ground scattered everywhere.

Overall I can say that I was more impressed with Half-Life 2's graphics two years ago then I am with Bioshock's graphics today, especially when you consider that it runs on a so called "revolutionary" engine, and also when you compare it to future games like Crysis. Clearly the Console influence is there, sadly, for us PC gamers to contend with.

SOUNDS: 10/10

Ambient sounds invade my speakers and my headphone in this game, like no others I've seen (or rather heard) before. There is not much to say than the fact that the sounds in BioShock are marvelously crafted and presented (a.k.a it fits the intended atmosphere and feeling of the developers, it makes Rapture sound "Like it should"). It probably has the best sounds in any FPS games I've played in a decade. It might sound exaggerated for some, but I do believe that even just what the Demo has to offer in terms of sound quality, quantity and variety is already worth the perfect score. I can't even imagine what the rest of the game will be like.

ATMOSPHERE: 8/10

It's well done, the level designs forces a semi-claustrophobic feeling in you (well it does for me) as you progress, making you often walk slower to turn that next corner because you don't necessarily want to fight whatever hostile life form might come at you, compared to other mindless FPS games around. I was more concerned to look at the environment and look for what might help me or hurt me for the potential next fight than to actually blindly rush to it like I would in Half-Life 2 for example or even S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (which by the way also has some nice atmosphere going on).

I wouldn't say that the sense of playing in an "ecosystem" is done to its maximum potential, but it does capture a good enough sense that "other things might be going on in that building you're seeing by the window". You know scripts and triggered events make things happen as you move on, on a technical perspective, but the forced feeling of life simulation is present enough to feel like a "living" world more than just a virtual reality of blend polygons and random sounds labeled as a "game". It's definitely better than Half-Life 2's atmosphere, in my opinion, which isn't lacking at all either, and even better than S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s well-made, well presented world of radioactive, rotten and ruined landscape with death in every corners and trees. BioShock's atmosphere is probably the best you can find in a first-person-shooter in recent years, definitely.

Overall score so far I'd give it around 8/10, 8.3/10 or so, but that's based on the Demo, not the final product, and that's running on DirectX 9. I will need to play the final game to judge new elements of the game such as the story-line, the A.I quality and re-playability potential.

I wonder why textures look like they have water on it? Are you serious?

I get around 50-70FPS on my rig.(eveything on high @1680x1050 and Vertical sync off)

8800GTX wtih C2Q 6600 @3.2Ghz.

To be honest, Graphics on XBOX 360 version (with my 42 inch HD Plasma) looks better than PC version.

Ran well at medium quality 1680x1050 on a x1950pro with a C2D 6600. Awesome demo, was too short though. Buying tomorrow.

Oh yeah, the sound work is amazing, probably the best I've ever heard in a game.

Just got home. I preordered the game and will pick it up tomorrow. I don't know if I should even bother installing the demo.

I installed the new nV drivers onto my rig (running XP) - major improvement. I was dipping into the 30s when a lot was going on, basically I get 40 and up now. 1920*1200 all settings maxed, 8800 GTX.

I notice the "plastic coated" look too; it's one of the few things that detract from the game for me. I'm also not sure why splicers and other AI-controlled actors have a faint purple glow shader on them. Kinda strange.

Yes absolutely serious, you'll see by yourself when you try it out, it's the kind of technical fact that no one will deny, however one could actually like the plastic-looking pillars and props or columns or weapons, but I sure don't. It doesn't make the game "bad" all of a sudden, but it does detract from the atmosphere to some extent, a non-negligible extent in my opinion, just enough to tell yourself "ok, why is THIS surface shiny ? doesn't make sense ... oh well, better move on to the next room before that Splicer gets me". It's just that, it's detractive.

Got it working by turning off the Highdef shadows. Didn't finish it but probably made it to the end, just ran away from a bunch of security guns and tried to hack another that blew up on me. Got killed there and then damn creeps kept spawning just outside the spawn cylinder.

Other than turning the shadows down, still had it at native res running fairly smooth. Visuals looked better than the feed I saw of the 360, but I'd really like to have a flashlight while walking around

Also may be one of those wear a headset games so you can pick up all the soft dialog.

I've tried it on 360 already. I figured "This is an underwater city; It is probably rather humid, creating a thin layer of moisture on surfaces". Granted, the developers might just have used the effect to create a false sense of graphical quality, but at least in Rapture it makes sense and I, personally, did not spend time staring at the floor during my time with the game. Heck, I've only seen PC gamers actually take time out of their playtime to check for textures/jaggies/etc. Most people playing the 360 version just play it for the game and appreciate the fact that it looks good and has that amazing gameplay.

I just finished the demo and am going to try to go grab the game tomorrow. All I have to say is that it looks *amazing*

Also, looking on amazon.com, does anyone else find it wierd that the PC version is $50 USD while the Xbox 360 version is $60 USD?

Am I the only one who can't get the demo running? I've already bought the full game and it's preloading, but the demo won't run from Steam. When it starts the screen goes black and just sits there until I open the task manager and kill it, then I get a message about it not responding.

I can deal with the demo not running but the game better work.

I just did a clean install of the beta drivers linked to earlier in this thread. It did the same thing on my old 158.something drivers.
