Well after reading all the drawbacks about this game I think I'm gonna hold off for now. No AA, no proper widescreen support, WTF is this?

Can't get sound with my onboard Realtek soundcard even after updating to the latest driver. Running DX10 & Vista 32...any ideas?

Did I misread the post about AA in the Unreal3 engine or did it say that NO U3 based game will have AA in DX9? I have to say, I didn't notice jaggies at 1600x1200.

On another note, Gamespot gave it a 9.0 for the X360 version. They gave Gears of War a 9.6 and Far Cry a 9.2. I've only played the demo so far, but I think it beats GoW, and definitely offers a deeper experience. Far Cry blew me away way back when, so if BS is as good as the rest of the critical world says it is, I don't see how they get that number. Though GS had performance issues with the x360 version, so if the PC version doesn't maybe it'll get a score boost.

The demo was great. The artwork, sound effects and general atmosphere are outstanding. I especially love the weapon effects; the wrench really feels and sounds like something heavy and powerful. The amount of small detail in the levels is top notch. I spent a fair amount of time just examining the areas more closely before I moved on. This is also the first game I have played in over two years that actually seems to be well optimized and runs nicely. I was able to get a more or less constant 60fps, with a few minor exceptions, at 1024x768 with all the details turned up on my old X1900XTX.

That being said, it certainly doesn't strike me as the "OMG BEST GAME EVAR MADE!!1" that a lot of the review sites are saying. I'll definitely be buying this, but a number of aspects of the game leave something to be desired. In general, it has quite obviously been dumbed down for consoles. The levels are pretty linear and have minimal interactivity. I was hoping you could at least pick up objects. The graphics are rather inconsistent, with magnificent water and displacement mapping effects mixed with various low poly models and some textures that look like they're from the Quake 2 era. The gameplay is a little odd, as health is essentially infinite due to the respawning while ammo is difficult to come by (like SS2, but it doesn't really make sense). At least in the demo, I didn't see any evidence of the complex statistics and inventory systems that SS2 had, or the story detail and reading material of Deus Ex either.

Finally, it uses the Havok physics engine, and sure enough, I ran into a vibrating corpse at one point.

I run using a Realtek ALC889A that uses the same High Def drivers and I had no problem. I don't recall the version that I'm using, but I can look later. I do know that I rebuilt the system earlier than 8/10, so I doubt I have those drivers.

After all the hype and reviews, I felt like I would be the only one thinking this after finishing the demo. The sound does a good job of creating a freaky atmosphere but the gameplay has been mediocre so far. It felt like a cross between FEAR and Oblivion, with less action. I don't feel engaged at all. The graphics are great in places, weak in others. Not sure what's with all the shiny everywhere. It reminded me of Doom 3 when people complained everything looked plastic. No idea what FPS I was getting but it was very smooth and stable.

No AA and cut-down widescreen = booourns.

I'll wait for a price-drop before I get this :brokenheart:

The underwater city and then the flooding made me instantly think of Titanic. Though it has a great story! The water looks very real compared to anything else. Why can't you change your viewpoint and go from first person to third person ? Why can't you change the keyboard controls for walking up, down, left and right ?

So this game does not support true widescreen. What a joke.

"Here, we added options for widescreen in the resolution list!!1!"

"haha fooled you, we just chopped the top and bottom off! lawlz"

Wouldn't the other way around just be cutting the sides off? I prefer a wider FOV with widescreen, it's true, but there's a right way and a wrong way to complain about it.

No.

Are you saying that they only have 16:10 and not 16:9? 'Cause they have 1440x900; which is considered widescreen.

No, I'm saying that while they offer widescreen resolutions, you actually see less than someone with a 4:3 monitor.

http://wsgfmedia.com/uploads/p...oshock/BioshockFOV.jpg

The red section is what you don't see because you bought a monitor designed to show you more, not less.

tsk tsk 2K, tsk tsk.

Meh, I'm not complaining. I didn't even notice anything strange about it. I'm just patiently waiting for it to be released on Steam...

Man the WS cut off is just stupid... what the hell were they thinking?

Yeah, reminds me of the first Doom3 reviews that very giving it 100/100. It was a good game, but 100/100? Not so much...

I really wouldn't worry about the widescreen cutoff issue. That seems like a field of view problem and should be easily fixed.

Yeah, I just read the big thread at the 2k forums, they confirmed they're looking into it.

I think it's a bit much to expect a demo to leave you with the impression that it's the best game you've ever played. I found it really atmospheric, and can't believe it would generate the reviews it has from people who have played the entire game if it didn't transcend the traditional shooter during the course of the gameplay.

If you're holding out on buying this game, exactly what does a game have to achieve for you to buy it? It's nearly universally hailed as the second coming. You're allowed to disagree, but I wouldn't base my opinion of the game just on a 10 minute demo. The people who've seen more have been extremely impressed.

I posted a topic yesterday about an error occuring when I downloaded the bioshock demo. I just finished getting it on Steam today and when I went to launch the program it started installing C++ Redistributable.

Suddenly stopping, it popped up saying, "The Feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." Then it asks to try again or browse for an alternative path to "vcredist.msi."

Sorry to bother again but does anyone have any idea what this is or where vcredist.msi would be and why I need it for Bioshock?

Thanks again

That is true to some degree, but you can still get a good overall feel of a game from demos. The full game will certainly be better in many ways, especially on the story side, but some things aren't going to change. I highly doubt that the full game will, for example, allow you to throw objects around or have large, sprawling level layouts with multiple paths to objectives.

Also, there are many reviews these days that just buy into the pre-release hype and don't really bother to compare with existing games. SCDA for example got uniformly high review scores, even on the PC, and that game turned out to be crap compared to the previous SC game.

Don't get me wrong, I think this is looking like an excellent game, but it seems to be more or less a standard FPS and not quite in the all-time classic category. That is, of course, just an initial impression.

It installed the C++ thing for me too, but it actually instlled fine. The demo didn't run but I don't know the cause for that yet.

Try downloading the C++ 2005 redistributable from MS's site and installing manually, then install the demo again.

Just downloaded the full game and so far it seems to be a lot better than the demo. Though I have to start playing it some more.

So when loading the retail copy of the game the first time, it logged onto some kind of activation server where I had to enter my serial #. Does this mean the game is now locked to my computer? Meaning, if I sell the game when I'm done with it, would somebody else be able to activate the serial #?

Just played through the demo on medium settings 1680x1050 and it played good. For the heck of it I put the settings on high with same resolution and the game was still plenty playable for me second time through. They done a excellent job on tweaking this game.

Yeah the rest of my system is good but I figured I would need a 8800 series to crank the game to high. The game looked great in DX9 can't wait to see it in DX10 when I upgrade. Of course I am in no hurry to buy the game. I am gonna wait till I can run it in DX10 mode before I buy it.
