The online activation is not the bad part IMO. It's the SecuROM DRM that pisses me off. At a minimum it should provide the 'user' an option to uninstall it after the game has been uninstalled. Hopefully this newer version can be removed (with some work) like the 7.xx versions.

Ok. This thread is way to large.

Mem how do you think pc gamers will be able to install Bioshock down the road like in 2 to 5 years times ? What if the servers go down indefinitely ? How are you suppose to install it then ?

The only thing I can think of is an image from True image.

Good point not thought about that actually, guess if you can't install patch via server down the road then no gaming in Bioshock, sucks is the only word I can think of.

Logically, an offical patch would be released at some point which removes the activation, either because sales are in the duldrums by then or because the publisher went bust. Valve/Steam have already stated they would do this for their games.

GPG have already released a patch to get rid of the copy protection for Supreme Commander because they realise how unpopular it is, and it'll obviously make a big dent in the number of support requests they have to deal with.

They said they wouldn't remove it! I hope they change their tune soon. I think its in one of the steam forums or their official forum where they said this.

There is so many topics about this issue now its hard to keep track lol.

I was able to return my copy of Bioshock to Gamestop today. Sorry, I just couldnt deal with the crap associated with it right now. Maybe a few months down the road, I'll rebuy a copy.

Anyways, if you are one of those who wishes to return it for actual money of how you paid for it for whatever reasons (securom/2k screwed you with the crappy no valid installation, unbearable crashes, .exe wouldn't start up, etc), you can tell them the following:

By law and according to 2K EULA agreement you agree to the terms and conditions regarding the installation of the product.

Under these set of rules, it is perfectly legal to uninstall the said product and reinstall it on another machine that is owned by the buyer of the product. Typically, one needs multiple products to install on multiple systems but one only needs one product and if he or she wished to uninstall the product, the consumer has every right to reinstall it onto another machine that is owned by him or her.....indefinetely.

Securom, hinges on your rights as the buyer. Securom, in general, does not; however, the practice of allowing only two installs do hinge on the right. It is the same as buying a Ford Mustang. True, you cannot advertise your Ford Mustang on TV to make profit as you would violate their buyers contract. HOWEVER, if you fully bought that Ford Mustang, it is yours until you deem fit to get rid of it. Ford cannot limit your driving or years of ownership if fully paid by you.

With your rights as a consumer both by US Consumer standards and by the very EULA contract on page 34 of Bioshock manual, 2K are in violation of their own contractual agreement with the buyer.

I'm not talking about the game being crappy for you to give the game back. Im talking about the violations that has occured under securom. Now, if 2K were to altar Securom so that you still need the DVD to play but allows you to receive unlimited installs, then their contract to you will be fulfilled.

But, right now, 2K is in violation of their User End Agreement.

Trust me when I say this. I graduated from Regent Law School in Virginia Beach, Va in 2006 and I received my license in Oklahoma after passing my Bar Exam in Feb. of 2007.

Explaining those violations will give you your refund back by the store you bought it from (with a receipt) or by 2K actual company.

Good luck.

If anyone would like to return their copy of Bioshock by law you can.

Someone who went to college for law so they should know what they are talking about. Though if you all want to ask him to post a picture of his degree with his username next to it be my guest!

If that guy has a law degree from regent law school, that school should take a hard look at itself. Hinges? Altar? Is this guy serious? Doesn't it currently work exactly as he stated, too, in that you can uninstall it and then install it elsewhere?

Not always. Sometimes you don't get the extra activation back so it leaves you with only one. One more strike and your out.

So true. I accidently threw a corpse at a slicer and killed it. I was like "damn." Its kinda like HL2 that way... but better.

A game with awesome gameplay can look like crap and I'd still play it if it was fun. Hell I still play way too much Internet Checkers that came with XP!

I'd eat burnt chicken before I'd eat well-flavored dogpoop but truth be it I'd not eat either and wouldn't expect to have to in any decent circumstance.

I'm not sure why people come out defending gameplay over graphics so often. It's weird to me. It's not like better graphics means poorer gameplay. Although the vice versa is true to me. Poor graphics = poor experience because suspension of disbelief won't happen.

Bioshock looks so fake I never get to the point of immersion.

Why aren't you guys buried in games from the 1990's if your assertions are true? Some of the best adventure games are from those days. Space Quest, etc etc. You can't have played them all.

Finally, all great, epic, 10/10 games, FFVII, Half Life 1,2, Far Cry, etcetera had superb graphics. This game is very good, but it doesn't reach this 98/100 level that its being touted at when most of its graphics are 6/10

half life 2 and farcry are more like 5/10 (or less) in my book. horribly overrated games.

Well, I'll agree that Far Cry was a tad lacking in the story dept, as was HL2 (and Oblivion for that matter).

I agree on all these games, except HL2 which I thought did a pretty good job with the story.

Far Cry was so bad towards the end I almost deleted it from my machine and when I played through it again I stopped 2/3 of the way through because all of the "good" parts of the game were finished.

Aside from the technical achievements and great scenery FC was mediocre at best.

I was pulled into the game pretty quickly, the game is dark and kinda scary when youre not paying attention to anything else. The audio and subtitle sync need to be fixed, the game arrows needed to be fixed (they dissapeared on me) also the subtitles dissapeared even when its enabled in options.

I fixed the sound problem by restarting the game, don't know if it was one off fluke or not,I'm using Vista x64 btw.

Reread what you responded to here please

- "Have you tried to go back and play HL1 recently? I played it a year or so back and the game was just as good. Sure the graphics were dated but it was everything else that kept me playing.

Originally posted by: Frackal
Yes I downloaded HL1 on steam a few months back. It is a good game but had nowhere near the punch or immersive quality that it did ~10 years ago, because of the very dated graphics.

ign.com gave HL1 an 8.5 for graphics stating "Nothing truly awe-inspiring, but the graphics are very clean and--this is especially important--full of variety. Each level does not look like the last." Now I don't take their reviews as my own. But generally when looking at a game they are a pretty reliable source, mostly. But anyway. Again the dated horrible graphics as you so call them did not deter me from the game itself, which was my point.

"How do you know people aren't still playing old games? Perhaps it's just new games that have grasped their interests for the time being. Would you say Warcraft 3's graphics are dated or "horrible"? What about the gameplay? Do you have any idea how many people play that still? "

Originally posted by: Frackal
Or perhaps not. What point are you trying to make? That graphic quality is not very relevant to gamers at large? Because my point was that it is.

My point is that you made an earlier statement that NO ONE plays old games because the graphics suck. So I proved you wrong.

- "A lot of people play games like they watch movies. Or enjoy games as they do movies. Basically games like Halo, Gears of War, etc are all overrated games that people love for some reason because they're pretty, or omg there's multiplayer. Your assumptions and conclusions about gaming are just wrong. Sorry dude"

Originally posted by: Frackal
Are you serious? You're decreeing that 'Halo, Gears of War etc' are overrated as though that's some demonstrable undisputed fact? And you find yourself getting upset regarding my personal opinion about one game?

I don't particularly care if you find Warcraft 3's graphics good or not. I'm certainly not going to chase you around the PC Gaming forum claiming that you're intoxicated because you do. So why it bothers you so that I along with many others have observed what we have in Bioshock is a rather odd IMO.

Listen, I know you love all the halo games and stuff. But take a breath here and listen. I made the comparison of a certain type of person who likes those games as well as certain types of movies. You fall into this category.

Now I have played halo and halo 2, which I thought sucked. Haven't had the chance to play GOW, but I'm sure it's the same crapfest that you people love for some reason.

My overall point here will be that gamers today are losing the sense of what makes a good game. I recently saw the "maker" of Gears of War on G4 tv. And while I was suprised, I really shouldn't have been. Ken and 2k made a great game, worthy of its scores. It's too bad there are other problems keeping people from playing, shit happens. But the masses aren't as understanding as a select few of us who actually appreciate it when people put effort into something they care about and are trying to provide the best experience.

But whatever dude, go back to GOW.

Played through the demo last night...apparently 2K fixed the widescreen issue, because I had a widescreen resolution option from the graphics menu. Here are my pros and cons for the game:

PROS:
Incredibly immersive environment and amazing sound design. Because the nature of the story is so tragic, I actually felt pity for the Splicers and other mutated citizens of Rapture, even as I stunned them with an electric jolt and then beat them to death with a hammer. The atmosphere, level of violence and subject matter is very mature, which is a nice change from the self-censorship so prevelant in the gaming industry these days. The storyline itself is enough to keep the player engaged. Atlas, a character that helps you along from the onset of your arrival at Rapture, provides vocal cues and plot devices at a surprisingly frequent rate, which further adds to the gameplay experience. The first time I encountered a Big Daddy and a Little Sister was very creepy.

CONS:
The game feels very claustrophic, although understandably so for an underwater city...but I can see some people having a gripe about the console-ish level design, as they did for Deus Ex 2. Also, the splicer encounters I have had thus far feel very scripted. However, because the levels are so confined, it does seem to elevate the enemy AI a bit.

I don't see why people are complaining about the textures and such...everything looks amazing to me, although the atmospheric steam and fog does become annoying at times...I have never been a huge fan of the Unreal engines...I think the Source engine or Doom3 engine would have been a better choice for Bioshock.

Like many other shooters these days, it still feels like you are on railroad tracks...granted, the detailed environments and atmosphere do compensate for it a bit, but the game doesn't seem as open ended as previous reports and press releases led me to believe.

Also the premise of the story is a bit played out...crash in the ocean and stumble upon a utopian science experiment gone horribly wrong...a bit too close to the plot of Lost for my tastes...also, the 1950s/1960s vision of the future design elements are very similar to those of the Fallout series. Maybe I am not far enough into the game, but it is not clear how long before you arrive in Rapture that things started to go to hell...given how violent the Rapture society became, it seems a bit odd that anyone is alive to roam the city by the time you get there.

Similarly, let's say you were to crash in the middle of the ocean only to find a mysterious lighthouse sitting there. Would you:
a. Remain at the lighthouse, look for other survivors, and attempt to activate the lighthouse and attract a rescue party, OR
b. Jump in a submarine that just happens to be at the lighthouse

Also, given that very early on in the game, you find out that the plasmids of Rapture causes its citizens to go insane, why would you choose to start injecting them yourself? Maybe some of these story elements will come full circle later in the game, but again, initially things seem a bit forced to move the story along.

I still consider System Shock 2 to be the best horror/survival FPS, with a touch of roleplaying elements...although the ending to System Shock 2 was a huge disappointment. Deus Ex comes in as a close second for attempting to provide a similar gaming experience.

I will most definitely purchase Bioshock. It is definitely in the same vein as System Shock 2, although I do fear the cross-platform development dumbed it down a bit.

I remember in System Shock 2, when I encountered the first few zombies, they kicked my butt...until I learned how to dodge, move and use the wrench to take them out. So far in BioShock, I have yet to die, and the presence of resurrection chambers throughout the levels does take the survival edge out of the game a bit...why does the main character resurrect, but none of the enemy characters do...just seems like a silly gameplay device.

Also, ammunition and ADAM is a bit too plentiful...I remember in System Shock 2 and Deus Ex, every ounce of ammunition was crucial...you had to make tough decisions on how to progress through areas, and expend your precious resources...so far in Bioshock, I have been able to essentially zap and shoot at will, with little concern for getting stuck with only a wrench to get by...in System Shock 2 and Deus Ex, I encountered numerous instances where all I had was the wrench or stun baton to get by areas after wasting ammo.

Overall, BioShock met my expectations, and it definitely worth checking out for fans of either System Shock 2 or Deus Ex.

I bought the game off of steam because I thought even though I still hate the way they did it its the lesser of two evils of the Bioshock game versions. I have hope that Value will stand up to 2kgamers.

I don't care what you believe. I changed my mind because I haven't bought a game in a while and decided I miss playing games with good gameplay. I haven't ever bought a game when it first came out. Bioshock has great gameplay its just these stupid issues stopping people to think before they buy for a while. I played the demo again to make sure I really wanted to spend that much sense I know it will go on discount in a few months or years.

Oh and heres the proof that if you upgrade your video card that Bioshock won't work anymore. http://forums.2kgames.com/foru...read.php?t=6589&page=6

I dare anyone on this forum to uninstall Bioshock then reinstall it on another pc, then uninstall it again and reinstall it again. I bet the third time it won't work. Even after uninstalling the 2 activations you were given are not given back. I just tried it on a friend's copy he bought at Circuitcity and now we can't get it to install on any of his pcs. He has a gaming pc, secondary pc and a laptop for college.

You know Regent is Pat Robertson's law school right? It's a tier 4 school in a Christ-centered environment. If the poster professed love for Jesus they'd let him in. Naturally GW has hundreds of Regent grads in his admin. Don't mean to go all P&N on you, but take whatever this guy says with a grain of salt, which as he would tell you is a remnant of the salt pile previously known as Lot's wife, a sinner who chanced a glance at the fallen cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
