Old people and landlines... a relative wants one, after failing to operate a cell and a MagicJack.

Problem is, they don't even offer copper lines anymore here. Oh well. Another one off the grid.

OTOH, this is probably a Good Thing. Can't spend all day sucking up Right-Wing garbage into their brain, and Cyber-stalking people.

Karma strikes Again!

So you can no longer even get a land-line at all?
Not a real, copper-based landline, no. Only a FIOS "digital freedom" VoIP line. Welcome to FIOS territory.

(Ok, I think that they could get a Comcast CDV line too, but that's also VoIP, at some level - only QoS'ed at a high-level within their network for reliability.)

Wow ... In Connecticut far as I know they are readily available.

Will there be any functional difference to the end user for the VoIP versus a copper line?

The fibre based one should work the same way as far as end user is concerned though, it's still a regular POTS service, it's just that the service comes from inside the house from the ONT. Only thing that might not work is pulse dial but other than that the rest of it should work. You even get -48v from it.

We just finally got rid of our land line. But mostly because of poor customers service and high ($40 month) cost.

The thing is, a POTS landline will almost always work. Power and or internet out? POTS works.

I do have GETS/WPS through work but I am retiring this year.

I did like the reliability and simplicity of a landline myself, it's nice having a "house phone". If you lose your cell or something you can still make a call from home. When Fibre rolled in I switched to that service for internet and the phone got switched over too. I kinda lost the simplicity and reliability aspect, ex: if there's a storm that takes out my drop I can fix it myself or if my power goes out for long I still have phone. With fibre, not so much. It's not a HUGE deal but something to consider. For power, the ONT is good for like 12 hours I think. While looking at ways to cut my costs of living I ended up just cancelling the landline and TV and went with just the internet though. Was going to look at a voip solution for the house phone and just never ended up bothering.

I sorta wish that I had a device that would detect either of our cell phones on the Wifi and use their call over wifi feature to make calls. Maybe have unique rings for each phone. Too easy for the wife's phone to be burried in a purse or something. Or just the ringer on silent. That's really going the other way. Plug into a POTS phone or be a handset itself.

There are dozens of bluetooth ones. Example (just the first link I found, I am not recommending this specific model):

My wife had a set of 4 similar ones all over the house. So she could hear a call and answer it anywhere in the house no matter where her cell phone was at. It worked quite well when it worked. The problem is that bluetooth at the time sucked. She wanted to bluetooth to a headset, and a car, and these phone handsets. Bluetooth does not do well when switching all the time. So, she stopped using them. But if your wife doesn't use bluetooth for other things, these do function.

Yah, I've heard about the blutooth ones and I've avoided them due to range and pairing issues. Blutooth just isn't robust.

Hey OP, do they have Viber or Zalo or any other communication apps for their smart phones? I use Viber or Zalo to communicate with friends and business associates across the globe and they are free to use.

I have a Comcast VOIP home line. Much better quality than copper calls. Works the same. My brother has a 3.5mm phone that looks like a handset from the old payphones that he plugs into his mobile phone. Every time I see him use it, I laugh.

I used to think that, but they rolled out Fiber to the Node here. It got me DSL but the nodes all have battery backups to run and they only last about maybe 24 hours before the phone is gone as well. So not great for extended outages, I can at least charge my cell in my car, I can't charge the fiber nodes.

I've heard verizon likes to rip out all your copper when they install FOIS.

I operated a VOIP line in my house 15 years ago. I paid like $60 annually through Packet8. My only issue with it was that it would occasionally disconnect and wouldn't automatically reconnect. This meant that people would call and they'd get shuffled to voicemail, etc....or I'd pickup the phone and have to troubleshoot before I could call out.

Cell service is pretty reliable most of the time, but certainly not as good as the low-tech POTS. They just can't afford to maintain those bundles of copper...you can only punch wires down so many times before they have to be replaced.

My wife and I have been married 45 years next week. When we moved into this house 18 months ago, we decided that for the first time in our lives, we'd forego the land line and just use our cell phones. Cell service here can be spotty...but so far, it's been good enough.

I see zero purpose in having a landline barring poor cell reception. The whole concept is archaic. You should be able to call a specific person when required, and not just a general area. A landline is only slightly less stupid than having your phone ring at the corner phonebooth(who remembers those?).

Most phones will call over wifi. Poor reception isn't much of an excuse at home these days. I used to have to choose provider by who could provide signal in my basement. Thank god that's over.

They should be sending out trucks with generators to charge up those nodes. Somebody is dropping the ball at their end. But yeah that is one downside of FTTN there are way more nodes to manage. It's actually more work on the part of the ISP, FTTH makes so much more sense from an ISP and customer point of view. Of course it's up to the customer to ensure the ONT gets power. The gel cell in mine goes bad after only a few years so I just pulled it out and plugged it into my big UPS.

Cell signal is usually minimal but i've never not been able to use mine at home. I also don't use it very often from home because i still have a landline. Verizon told me a had to keep a landline if i want to keep my DSL service.

My parents have horrible cell reception even though they are close to "town". They couldn't be cell phone only.

If you want them to go wireless only, get them an iPhone preferably the big screen one and problem solved.
They won’t like it but they will be capable of making & receiving call. After a while they’ll be able to text.

Our last house was that way. The neighborhood was in a "bowl" with tall hills on 3 sides. Cell service was nearly non-existent.
