I knew it was there but was inaccessible, it was in a far corner in one of the joist bays, started ripping out some unnecessary wood (no idea what they were trying to do there) and got to it and removed it.

Says "Northern Electric. Made in Canada". This thing is OLD! Northern Electric eventually turned into Northern Telecom, which turned to Nortel.

I'll be waiting for Red Squirrel's "My roof has collapsed because I removed some wood that apparently had a purpose I didn't understand" thread...

lol no this was clearly not load bearing. Think it was just to cover the insulation in the joists but it was a super shady job and had no vapor barrier or nothing.

how old the house?

we had a 100+ year old farmhouse. we did some work and found some really neat stuff in the walls and hooked up to wireing/phone. wish i would have taken pictures of the stuff but it was like 15 years ago.

It was built in 1965. Come to think of it, the phone system would probably have been on the old relay style switching technology too. I think the DMS got installed in the 70's or so. It's still humming away today.

And insurance is clearly unnecessary...

Insurance would not cover that anyway. If I was actually pulling out load bearing stuff and the whole house collapses well it's on me. Same with a car, if I try to avoid an accident and crash in a snow bank and dent the frame, insurance wont cover that because it's a single vehicle accident and they can just say it's negligence.

And again NO IT WAS NOT FUCKING LOAD BEARING FFS. The pieces of wood had like 2 nails going into them and came out loose once the nails were removed. It's not rocket science to see if something is load bearing or not. You must be one of those people that is scared to remove baseboards because it could be load bearing.

Calm down sir. Jesus doesn't like you using words like that.

I'm just sick of people always trying to find something to ridicule me and constantly launching personal attacks. Removing a few small pieces of wood that are barely hanging off a joist is not going to do anything.

For the record, this is where the wood was:

There was insulation at the last joist, then pieces of wood tucked in to cover the insulation. This could have easily been drywall, or any other product and was just there for aesthetics. In fact it was cut out around the duct work hangers in spots where duct work ran, indicating it was added after.

What makes you think that? Of course insurance covers a single vehicle crash. Like any other "at fault" accident, your liability covers any property you might have damaged (fences, landscaping, signs, light poles, etc.), and your collision covers your car. That's what insurance is for.

With a house, don't quote me, but I'd think that the bank requires insurance to cover even acts of stupidity. In the case of homeowner's insurance, when there's a mortgage, insurance is for the bank as much as the homeowner.

I'll be honest with you and tell you this - you get ridiculed because beyond a seemingly small range of things you are very knowledgeable about (IT, PCs, servers, etc) you are very naïve and really don't seem to understand how the world works outside of what you know. This is why. Read beyond the "attacks" and see why people treat you his way.
