Old point and shoot vs new phone

My old camera is a Fuji f40d. My new phone is an LG G3. Which one do you think is a better camera and why? Just used for normal ever day pictures, soccer game, kids birthday party, vacation, etc. The high MP seems wasted if I don't have large prints made with the G3. The larger sensor on the f40d seems like it would be better. f40d also has an optical zoom, but lacks image stabilization. I would assume the flash is better on the f40d also. So to me it seems like the old f40d is better?

Basic specs f40d:
8 MP
1/1.6" CCD
3x optical zoom

Basic spec G3:
13 MP
1/3" CMOS
Optical image stabilization
Laser AF

They will both suck but if you don't need to zoom in (optical zoom) then the G3 is going to win for most people based on sheer convenience. If you do need optical zoom then the f40d.

Larger sensors of the same era tend to do better, all else equal, but the f40d was from a prior era, and furthermore what is the lens max aperture between the two? A small sensor with fast (f/2 or faster) and sharp lens can do very well vs. a much larger sensor with slower and crappier lens.

I know they aren't DSLR's just curious if there was any reason to even use the f40d. Convenience isn't really an issue for me.

The G3 is F2.0. The f40d is Wide-angle: F2.8 - F8, 10 steps in 1/3 EV increments and Telephoto: F5.1 - F8, 10 steps in 1/3 EV increments

Maybe post side by side samples and see for yourself if the quality difference makes one worth it over the other?

Everything you mentioned are quite challenging situations, even for an advanced camera.

Anyway, the older, larger camera most certainly has the better lens and larger sensor. 8 MP + good lens can get you decent size prints.

What's stopping you from testing the two options yourself?

Nothing is really stopping me from testing it. It was just something that popped in my head at work, and I thought I would get some opinions it.

Lots of MP doesn't assure a good print. You still need a decent sensor and processor. Most likely, your phone is going to be better for most of these situations which are candids/snaps that won't get printed but just saved for the sake of memory.

To decide what to take on vacation, go to your nearest park or something take identical shots in various lighting conditions, print them and see how they compare.

Smartphone unless you're compare to old gem p/s like Nikon Pxxx or Canon Sxx. Fuji made some very nice p/s but xD card suck.

Newer Nokia or iphone are very good especially highend Nokia.

And you don't have to carry extra unit.
