Old RAM question

I've got this old Asus A7V133 that I'm trying to rehab and I discovered that one of the RAM chips is bad, leaving me with only 128 MB of working PC133 RAM. Obviously if I want to get this working I need more.

Searching for RAM, I see that there is one type of RAM that is used for Asus motherboards, and a different type that's used for other motherboards. I've seen on several retail sites that they're not the same. But all the specs look exactly the same. So what's the difference?

Here's an example - a link to the non-Asus RAM:

And a link to the Asus RAM:

They're almost the same price so it doesn't really matter, and honestly I'm not sure if it's worth it to buy old RAM for this hunk of junk anyway. But now I'm just curious as to what the difference is.

Hmmm, never heard of "Asus specific" RAM. I had a A7V (not a A7V133), and I don't remember it needing anything special.

They probably are the exact same. I only noticed one difference i the specs and that is one of the ram sticks has 7/7.5ns and the other is 7.5ns. I wouldnt bother upgrading it unless you can get a good deal from ebay or somwhere else on pc 133 ram.

MUKid, I don't think it will make a difference. I am still running a Pentium 3 1.2 GHz Tualatian chip in an ASUS TUSL-2 motherboard with 512 megs of PC 133 RAM from Crucial. Never had a problem after all these years. I suggest going over to Crucial's website and check out their offerings. You can buy directly from them or check out other reputable online dealers where you might get it cheaper.

Yeah, they don't look any different to me, either. But it's weird, isn't it? They're both the exact same price, so it's not like they're trying to trick people out of a few more bucks or something. And this isn't the only retailer where I've seen this, either.

Soviet, I'm with you on PC133 not really being worth it. But can I run the newer stuff on this old motherboard? I think my only choice is buying the old stuff. On a MB-for-MB basis it's definitely overpriced compared to the newer, faster stuff, but to use the new stuff I'd have to buy a whole new motherboard - which would mean a new processor - and that's way more than the $85 or so I could spend on 1 GB of old crappy RAM!
