HP driver software that was nothing but driver software and not bloated spyware infested ink marketing software that also happens to drive a printer.

This

Seriously.

The last time I dl'ed a printer driver it was 50MB for the minimal download. I just couldn't think of anything that would make it require more than a MB to print.

Now, I understand why LCD is the future (or oled, or led/lcd, or whatever), but I gotta say that I much prefer my older set.

What other techs do you prefer old school versions of?

Another one I'd add is laser printers - I friggin hate inkjets, but they seem to have won the war

I've got an early 60s vaporizer/humidifier that you put the camphor liquid in. That thing could power a locomotive.

I can hear some of the hissing and popping when I'm listening through headphones. I don't think it sounds quite as nice as a straight play on the decks but I honestly can't be bothered to change out records constantly.

My main point is that all the additional features and convenience of MP3, for me, beats out the audio quality of pure vinyl.

Really, if you are ripping from vinyl, you should investigate FLAC.

FLAC > mp3 (though FLAC is newer)

I haven't read the thread, so I don't know if it's been mentioned, but butter is a million times better than margarine, or I Can't Believe It's Not Butter, or anything else that has been designed to replace it.

Absolutely agree. Can't beat da' DEET.

Yeah, I don't even bother with it if it doesn't say DEET. The difference between repellants with DEET and those without are like night and day when you have to hold perfectly still while hunting.

I remember reading an article in a magazine that talked about in some african country where a million people were dieing yearly from malaria. When DEET was introduced into pesticides there the malaria deaths went down to something like 280. But then DEET was banned and once it was pulled out malaria deaths skyrocketed the next year to something like 700,000.

Causing that many deaths over the fear of something of which we have no definite proof of harmful effects seems crazy to me.

Not to burst your bubble.

It was DDT that was banned.
Nothing ever happened to DEET.

Yes, BIG TIME.

I have no idea where HP went wrong, but somewhere along the line they decided that their 5k printer driver needs to be a 550 MB behemoth that also serves as your portal to the internet.

My CRT HDTV has a better picture than just about any LCD HDTV I've seen. The color rendition seems to be worlds better. It is pretty small, though.

Speaking of crts, my old (deceased) lowly 27" sony trinitron vega in STANDARD DEF provides a more vivid and sharp picture when fed clean footage than most high def sets out there right now.

I know it's not an apples to apples comparison

Negative. As soon as I buy a record I clean it, rip it, then put it in a plastic sleeve and shelve it. I get the nice 'warm' sound of an LP but all the convenience of library searching and playlists.

obviously, you care about your music. if you're going to rip a record, i strongly suggest encoding in a lossless format. imo, flac is best

This was a horrible example. All you really did was assert your ignorance about televisions.

Old mostly-text-based adventure games with basic graphics and good story (think early 90s) >>>>>>>>> modern halo clones with flashy graphics and no story. Sure just running around shooting things can be fun, but it's the mental challenges in a game that will generally get me enthralled. Doesn't apply to multiplayer games.

Reading a book/paper document > reading an internet article/eBook

Old Disney > New Disney (excluding PIXAR). Curse of the Black Pearl was awesome, Dead Man's Chest was funny, End of the World was pure crap. I'm also waiting for the next 2D animated classic. Last one of note was The Lion King. Still waiting...

Flashing LEDs on cars are annoying. They slam on and off instantly. Can't beat the slow winking of an incandescent. Much more pleasing to the eye.

And for interior lighting the warm yellow glow of an incandescent has way more charm and atmosphere than a harsh white fluorescent. See? :light:

more of an implementation issue. It should be easy to design a 3 stage one. Divide the leds into 3 groups and you light up 1,2,3 groups depending on how far the brake pedal is being pushed.

CRT TV pwns all current flat panel tv.

Yep. I've tracked down two used Sony 34xbr960s because I wanted the best picture quality. I tried a $2000 Samsung 40" Samsung last year, and even my Insignia HD-CRT spanked it in image quality.

Somewhere in the thread, someone asked about the largest CRT sizes. As far as I know, the largest made was 40" (4:3), the largest widescreen with a flat-screen was 34", and the largest widescreen period (with curved glass) was 38" from Lowe Anconda, but it had no HDMI/DVI and only one component input.

To contribute, 480P for regular DVDs is > than upscaling to 720p or 1080i. I have a Samsung A-2 player, considered one of the best consumer-level upscalers for DVDs, and Event Horizon looked WAY better at 480p than 1080i last night.

Oh, and of course plasma looks better than LCD - better blacks, better color, better everything, etc. LCD is not the future, it is the future for low cost displays but not high quality ones.

There are electric stove tops that work just as well as Gas, some would argue even better. In fact many high end restaurants use electric stove tops.
