I own Trist, Nunu and Anivia.. really want to pickup a melee (preferably mana-free), but probably going with Yi for the cheap price. Intention is to stick with the melee as I'm terrible with them and I want to master one. Unless there's an amazing melee at 1350 that is head and shoulders above Yi?

Yi is vulnerable and you will be mana hungry and money hungry. I think he is a lot of fun though, especially if you play smart. You might save up and get morde though.

If you want a good melee, I'd say save up your IP for Xin, Garen, or Olaf. They're the melee characters that can actually survive melee and not get taken out as easily as Yi. Jax is a little below them if you really can't wait.

For Melee Characters I love crownjules' recommendations (especially xin and garen, learn to jungle if you get olaf), that said I also like Sion but I mainly play him as AP or hybrid since he doesn't have any effective way to get into melee range other than landing his stun. If you do want to go AD Sion, be sure to pick up some AS as he is really slow naturally.

I have xin, and garen, and played a lot of olaf. All three are great chars. Yi is okay for low levels, but he just doesn't cut it at higher play. A maxed out Xin, Garen, or Olaf will eat a maxed out Yi. Even jax will.

What do you guys think about Mundo? friend of mine was trying him and we laned together with galio.

annoying as hell with his cleaver and always good to get those hiding in the bushes.

Another one to really consider is Tryndamere. Forget Yi, Trynd will eat him alive.

Trynd can be deadly, but is countered by stuns and exhaust. When XStrifeX and I ran a game last night, he picked last and took temmo (blind) + exhaust and another teammate also took exhaust specifically to counter Trynd. Combined with my stun (Sion) Trynd didn't do anything but die.

I put them in my post, Trist, Nunu and Anivia. I've played a lot of champs, but want to get a melee to make as an alt. Garen is not a consideration due to being a ban favorite. Xin and Olaf are good but 3150. Morde is a favorite of mine because it's one of the few champs I've gone 1v1 against with my main and had to run. Tryndamere is a 1350 champ, I've been looking at him but don't know much about him.

FYI Poppy is a very similar champ if you want someone else with that type of anti-carry playstyle.

Olaf has amazing range with Undertow.. I like that for chases, but Xin appears to be the better overall melee.. outside of Garen he looks tops.

Morde isn't really melee. Granted, there's times when he'll whack people around (team fights/about to die/other player stupid), but the vast majority of my damage comes from siphon/creeping death. Generally, anyone smart will avoid being in melee range with morde for most of the game, and he has no way to make them melee him.

mord is a good tank/carry. he doesn't do all that much damage by himself unless you build him for AP, but if you kill someone with his ult, instantly you can push a tower no problem or pwn the other team in a teamfight.

Yeah but you could say the same for any melee hero, the difference being that Trynd can out-survive the others.

Trynd is very easy to completely shutdown. Focus him down fast so he doesn't have time to hit much. Once he pops Rage and goes into all crit mode is when you hit him with a Blind. As both effects are about to run out you get a DOT on him, preferably an Ignite to reduce the upcoming heal he's going to pop. 1-2 hits as he tries to spin away and that usually kills him dead.

So as Zeb mentioned, me playing Teemo + 2 exhausts made this pretty much always happen. They also had a Yi (the combo of Yi + Trynd made me counter pick Teemo) which we similarly shutdown with blinds anytime he tried to engage.

Not all melee champs get shutdown by blind because they're not dependent on auto-attacks for all their damage. All of Garen's abilities still hit when blind, Xin has his ult and dash, and Olaf ults and says "I CAN STILL SEE" or has Undertow and Wreckless Swing that work when his ult's not up. That's why they're widely considered the better melee fighters because they aren't shut down by Exhaust which anyone can carry.

edit: Regarding Mundo, he's a decent melee with great durability. Cleaver saves him from the clutches of Exhaust.

Ok just had an epic win. Poppy + Gragas in the same lane = double body slam. It was like 20-1 before they started getting kills, the one death was an overconfident Garen at like lvl 2.

Gragas is fun. I think I'll pickup Yi for now, maybe Xin if I continue with pure melees. I wouldn't mind having Gragas either. Something tells me he isn't god tier, but he's definitely on the fun tier.

Tried out a couple of other champs tonight. Sivir is a rather boring hero, but she can sure clear out a wave quick. Played some more fiddle sticks and got the hang of him, did pretty good both games and won both. Found myself harassing vlad for once. Got a pretty good selection of champs unlocked for a variety of roles. Even though other tanks might be better, the tank I play best as is Gragas. I just suck at anything else. I actually do good usually solo queued with Amumu, but never in arranged.

So, my last 4 games have been terrible. Have just had teams that seemed to have no idea what was going on. Last game we had me as Kat, Ryze, Fiddle, MF, and Amumu. MF kept running off on her own when the whole group is going into team-fights, then only popping in at the end to suicide trying to kill whoever was lowest on health, and went 4/12 (3 kills were after our whole team was dead). Rest of the team went 0/15ish, and I went 4/0, then 4/3, then finished at 11/6, including an almost single-handed ace (got ambushed by 3 that were low on health, ult=dead, by the time the 4-5th got there, my ult was ready again). Only reason it worked was even their tanks were going for damage because we couldn't have a cohesive fight, so they were all pretty squishy, and the only tanky person they had was Garen. It was just ugly. Their Warwick left at level 7 5/0/0, so nearly the whole match was 5v4. I just needed to rant. Oh, and MF was talking crap to our team the whole game, including when she was 1/5/0 and I was 4/0, rest of team was 0/7ish. And she stacked 3 Tiamats. Anybody know a reason to stack Tiamats, I was under the impression they were a terrible item, anyway.

i was building nasus as a pure tank last night (4k+ hp) and seemed to be doing pretty damn well. it might have just been that the other teams sucked though, but i'll keep testing it out!

one game was against a yi, olaf, trynd, warwick, and sona. soooo physical heavy. so what'd i do? grab thornmail, and they all died . literally in the teamfight, our amumu initiated, i ran in afterwards and threw down my ult, and they all focused me. i walked away alive

Had 3 good matches after that terrible team. Last 2 surrendered @ 25 and 27 minutes. Went 5/0/5 and 4/0/3.
