Alright, who's still here from the old dayz?
And who still crunches?

Ok, so it's been a while since I have been here. But I still crunch...

Can't say that I've crunched with my 486's but did with my Pentium 100 back in 1999 when seti started.

*sigh*

I do. Back when I was running the RC5 bovine project. Mooo!

I posted the following back in April of 2000, from Assimilators Saved DC Forum Threads:

Home, all doing RC5 24/7:
1 Cely300A@464
1 P100
Crack Rack Nodes RC5 24/7:
2 P75@100
1 K133
1 486DX/66

Son's friend doing RC5 whenever it's on:
1 PIII500

Work all running RC5
1 Server 266mhz 24/7
1 Server Dual P200 24/7
11 PCs ranging from P75@100 to 266mhz 24/7
10 PCs ranging from 166mhz to 266mhz on during work day
Occasional (read: rare) access to Dual PIII600 Server whenever it's pulled from production

I did SETI back in the day with my 486dx33, was probably about 1995-96ish if I remember correctly. I still have parts, pieces of that same rig..........still runs, only as a Pentium 200mhz. Updated the mobo and cpu.

I don't think I ever ran a 486 but I do remember crunching Seti on a Cyrix 5x86 which took 11 days per work unit!

By the way, I just fired up Boinc and started Seti again after a long break. Only on an old Sempron right now but it's nice to be back.

After building my 1st computer (Celeron 333 @ 500? with help from Wiz), I joined TeAm AnandTech and started running SETI at the invitation of Assimilator1. The computer it replaced was handed down to my son with the understanding that he'd run SETI 24/7.

That was the beginning of Smokeball/TeAm Smokeball/TeAm Smoke/Enterprise/TeAm Enterprise.

If I recall correct I did some SETI crunching back in the day with my 486DX4-100...

Took forever to complete a unit as far as I can remember too...

*whacks Ray with Ray's own cane*

I must admit I did once run RC-5 on a 486 for the novelty of it. It wasn't fast, and since it was DOS it wasn't very easy to do either.:Q

I ran SETI on a 486 for a very short time until I decided that it was too painful even when compared to my lame K6-2 300mhz, so I turned it off before it ever finished a work unit.

Though I started crunching SETI in Oct 99 it was with a 'modern' Cel 366 @550 , still got that same CPU in a working rig now! ,though it hasn't crunched in about 4yrs or been regularly used in 2yrs.
On the earlier versions of SETI classic (pre v3.03) it did WUs in about 7-8hrs, quite the powerhouse in its first year .

Oh & currently cruching SETI & DPAD on my main rig (done some F@H too), I've only just switched my main rig back onto SETI in a big way after over 2yrs on DPAD.

I wonder what happened to MisterM? (my 1st SETI racing buddy).

See, and I knew they where worth the days of crunching.

Now I just get laughed at if I even mention a 486. Oh wait, the first computer I had was a 286. And that thing hardly ran dos.

I don't remember if I crunched on a 486, but I joined the RC5 project fairly early on I think. I don't remember what kind of PC I had, perhaps a K6-2 or Pentium MMX.

It's amazing to see how long ya'll have been crunching. Unfortunately, lizardth didn't introduce me to it until much later in the game. My first machine was a Tandy 1000 SL/2 (8086 @ 8MHz).

No crunching with 486s for me, though plenty of Seti & RC5 with Pentiums and Pentium Pros. Recall if you will, I had an ALR Revolution 6-way PPro 200 running the RC5 project. Plenty of coordinated flushes and dumps to mess with the Dutch Power Cows!

And while, I'm not doing either of the above projects, I do crunch Riesel Sieve & Orbit@Home - and ALWAYS still only for Team Anandtech!

I remember looking at the overall project stats in SETI when I first started and seeing that the top cruncher in the world had a grand total of 63 workunits completed. I thought to myself, "Piece of cake! Number one in the world, here I come!" Then I fired up the GUI client on a P100 and it took eight days to finish the first workunit.

Imagine my disappointment.

I'm currently crunching Rosetta but only with four systems and the main server is only crunching at night. At one point, I had 22 systems running S@H.

I remember trying seti on just about anything I could get my hands on, including some real old machines that would (practically) never finish a WU.
I think the longest I tried one ran for a month before it either finished or I killed it off.
(can't remember which)

My big producer back in the day was one of those celly 300@450 rigs.
With the timings set really close you could pump out (IIRC) a couple WU's a day!
I had two hefty blocks of aluminum connected together with brass bolts - I sandwiched the cpu between them and on one side attached a HSF and the other had a peltier with another HSF.
This way I could set the timings really low and run at 450mhz 24/7/365. That baby put out a lot of WU in it's day.

P-90's were fun, especially the ones with the math bug!

OC'ing the snot out of something until it started completing WU's in 2 seconds then backing off a bit so they would work correctly was a fun way to find your stable speed.

I can't remember but there was a certain rig on which you could reliably set it to do that - I think that's how some people got some very high counts. That and hacking the client of course.

Nowadays I just set it & forget it for the most part. I look at the stats once in a while to make sure the machines are still running. I dunno if I'm just getting older or if I just don't have the time to futz with things like I used to. Maybe just don't want to deal with the downtime caused by pushing the hardware too hard.
(Geeze I'm going to be 50 next birthday! That must be it!!)

I strated in 2001 and crunched with anything I could get. I am sure that probably included some 486 machines....... I don't really remember though...

Is there a way to search for forum members? For some reason I have the name Wintermute in my head and was currious if he was still around?
