I've lived in NY for 6 years now and I amazed at all the old Volvo's on the road here. I grew up in PA and never saw this many when I was growing up.

Does anyone know why this area has a thing for old ass Volvos? Are they cheap to repair or something?

Edit: corrected my idiocy... at least temporarily.

You need to save money somehow if you live in NY. Also, old=character, a way of standing out - any idiot with lots of money can buy a new car, but THEY'RE ALL THE SAME!

Not sure, but I used to own one.

To clarify one of the reasons I had one was that I could buy one used for the same price as a new Acoord or Camry, and I had power everything and great luxary features, with an Acoord or all that new Japanese crap, I only would have power seats on the dirvers side only and things like that.

Yeah, that seems to be the idea here I think. I had a boss in NYC that was convinced a Mercedes would run forever if you simply changed the timing belt every once in a while.

I always thought they were strong (more steel) and safe but I never associated Volvo or Mercedes with reliable, but maybe that's wrong. One certainly sees more 1970's Volvos here than 1970's Hondas.

QFT

I drive a 88 Volvo 240 Dl wagon, 200K miles, thing still runs like its did 15 years ago
when i was in boston my 2 roomates had them as well 1 a 92 240 wagon the other a 87 240 sedan

there were 12 volvo 240s parked on the street where i lived

i have mine cause
1) it runs fine
2) its cheap as hell to insure
3) its a fing tank - ive hit dear and killed them with no visible damage to the car
4) you can put a lot of junk in them

My wife sold a 240 DL that had about 850k , its still running somewhere out in Kansas.

Since then weve had a 960 wagon sold with 190k and a new/used Volvo V40 wagon with 18k that we still have. My personal favorite was an 850 Tubro brick with 280k miles, no problems when I got rid of that one to get the wagon. It was a cool rust color that I havent seen anywhere else. (no, wasnt actually rust)
The extended family has 2 XC70 wagons and they are great and tow as much as a truck

BTW the 850 was responsible for totalling two other cars due to their drivers being dumb, the only thing needing fixing in both cases was the front bumper. No panel work at all.

volvos are definetely NOT cheap to repair. they also require regular service or they won't run well, like many european makes. however, they pretty much run FOREVER, which is why you see a lot of old volvos all over the place.

oh yeah, a cadillac crashed into me when i driving a 740 wagon once. the cadillac was by far the worse for wear, pretty much undriveable. the 740 drove home and needed only a replaced left front fender.

i love the Top Gear video of Clarkson crashing a Volvo sedan. he went way too fast because the speedometer wasn't working and smashed into a brick wall, knocking the wall over. he broke his hand in the impact from gripping the wheel so tightly. the volvo drove away, of course.

the older ones ARE chreap to repair because there are so manyt you can fine every part you need at the junkyard for 2$ and fix it yourself

volvos are crazy expensive in the south. you'd pay an arm and a leg to get it fixed if something went wrong with it.

true, but service from a volvo-specialist mechanic is expensive, and your average white-collar volvo driver isn't a grease monkey. in comparison, japanese cars can be tougher to work on yourself, but are cheaper to have worked on by a mechanic. 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

Yes I wouldn't say they are cheap to fix, especially ordering the parts, I used to get mine off of Ebay so it made it a lot more bearable.

Volvos are built like tanks, at least they used to be. Never rusted if taken care of, and even when if they weren't and they started to rust it didn't matter.
