I'm sure this has been covered before, but I've looked all over the place to no avail.

I have installed a new motherboard (and processor) - the KT7 with a 1.1Ghz TBird. I'd like to carry on using my original installation of Win2k, but it moans when I try to start it up, saying INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. I can't seem to do much about this, as the repair mode won't help, running setup installs a new copy of Win2k and Safe Mode is hopeless

Thanks to anyone who can help

I did the exact same thing with the motherboard and win2k. Exact same error. All I could do to fix it was to reinstall.

I would like to know how to fix it also for future reference.

It would seem we're not the only ones - alt.comp.periph.mainboard.abit has a chap called Tony with the same problem. I know Win2k doesn't like motherboards being changed, but there must be some way around it.

Jim, when you re-instaled it did you just format the drive and start from scratch, or were you able to re-install over the old instalation, keeping all your settigns and programs. When I went through setup again it put a new version of Win2k on the pc in C:\WINNT (I use C:\WINDOWS normally) and made my boot menu look like this:

1. Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
2. Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
3. Microsoft Windows 98

Although a bit of editing of BOOT.INI sorted that mess out

Any help with this problem would be great

Thanks, Tom

Well I reinstalled over the existing install but it did not keep all my settings and what not. I couldn't format because I had 20 gigs of info on that disk and had no way to back it up from DOS.

And since I just reinstalled over the existing install the boot loader just keep the one install and didn't need the boot menu. I would assume that if you have win98 installed also that it would be

Windows 2000
Win98

Try going into the Win2k recovery console (boot from the CD, then go to setup..there is an option for recovery console) and type this:

CHKDSK C: /P /R

It worked for me, but I didn't get that error in the same manner. It's worth a shot.

One thing you could try is go into control panel -> system -> device drivers and remove the devices. Restart and let it installs the new drivers. It is likely something from the old mb got left over and cause conflict with the new stuffs. Good luck.

I don't think it's a problem with the hard disk, because early on in the year when I switched a drive from another motherboards' IDE controller to the Promise Ultra66 add in card i got the same message - and win98 works fine so the HD is ok. I think Windows2k just doesn't like IDE controllers being changed

I remember a while back on a hardware site (i think it was tweak3d, but i might be wrong) that someone wrote about a tool that Microsoft Made that reset the machine data so you could change motherboard - anyone remember this?

Thanks, Tom

Oops. My mistake. I am sure you check and make sure your boot.ini point to the correct partition (the ARC thingy...) BTW, if you install c:\windows (old) and c:\winnt (new and working) both should be the same except for the name. If not then make them the same and try again. If you have multiple HDD and you install win2k on your primary, remove all the other one and set your HDD as primary in bios and give it a try.

I'm sorry crystal, I'm probably being a bit stupid (it certainly wouldn't be for the first time, but what do you mean by

I can't seem to choose where win2k is installed to during installation - are you indicating that I should try to do this. Or are you saying something completely different

Thanks, Tom

There's an advanced option menu when you originally install Windows2k. Going from weak memory on the install, I believe there were 3 clickable bars, the one in the middle was for advanced options. There you can set the partition you want.

I doubt I'll find many clickable bars in Win2k setup - it's all text mode for me - And I could only find an option to install on my C drive, but I couldn't choose where (what folder) it would be installed in.

Win2k is really good when it works, but I do admire the fact that when I changed motherboards Win98 didn't moan at all, and after a couple of restarts worked fine

From reading your second post,

[*] When I went through setup again it put a new version of Win2k on the pc in C:\WINNT (I use C:\WINDOWS normally) and made my boot menu look like this:
1. Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
2. Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
3. Microsoft Windows 98

Although a bit of editing of BOOT.INI sorted that mess out [/li]

I assume you install win2k at c:\windows (and not working after upgrade) and reinstall a new win2k at c:\winnt (and working) or did I misread again?

Sorry crystal - I haven't been too clear about my OS

I originally had Win98 on my hard drive. I upgraded this to Win2k when Win2k came out, and thus my Win2k is in the folder C:\WINDOWS. After installign win2k I put a fresh version of Win98 on another partition on the same drive - d:\win98

When I ran Win2k setup again it game me no option of where to install other than on what partition, and when I chose my existing win2k partition it installed it in the folder c:\winnt - however this will have none of my settings and programs
