I bought a dell OptiPlex computer system. I want to put the computer in a new case but when i look inside I find a ribbon cable connecting the motherboard to the case (For the LED's and power button ect)

My question is is there an adapter or another (better looking) case i can buy that used the USB ribbon cable to connect the motherboard to the case? Or is there a work around for it?

Thanks

I wish you luck as you might need it. Dell is very proprietary and any type of work around can be an uber-PITA.

Prowel around http://www.endpcnoise.com/ I know they offer an adapter cable to facilitate installing an ATX PSU onto a Dell mainboard. They might offer more goodies.

Best I got.

PS: there are a couple techs that come through this forum every so often that might be able to nail it for you. Bump your thread every 24 hours for a week if you have too.

Thanks for your help GalvanizedYankee ill take your advice about bumping the thread. And I know that Dell is VERY proprietary. One look inside the case and I saw everything custom made, and some things i'v never seen before.

If there is, I am not presently aware of anything like it. The folks who have done what you want to do haven't worried about that problem; there are others that are much more difficult to deal with by comparison (the new case leads to the front panel will fit on the old MB pins just fine).

Where you run into trouble is the psu to MB connector, since the old psu almost never has the total power needed to do any upgrading. There definitely is an adapter for a Dell MB to allow an upgrader to use an ATX standard power supply. Dell MB's and psu's have ("typically") had what is called a "proprietary" power plug that looks normal, but is wired uniquely.

The HSF is also not ATX standard, and must be replaced.

First your questions are unclear - look at the title for starters. Isn't what you're wanting to do just the opposite of that (older mobo into new case)? Then you start talking about front panel connections and slip the term USB in there, well which is it? IAC, my answer would be approximately the same. Just reverse them if your intentions are as per the title, rather than the text.

Not all Dell PSU mobo connections are non-standard - I think they've mostly learned their lesson on that one, so you may be a lucky one.

As far as the front-panel wiring is concerned, you just need to know the pinout (what signal each important pin is) of your mobo's front panel connector to use the standard connectors that come with most cases. The hardest thing you'll have to do (perhaps) is shift a contact or two within a shell (usually power LED and/or speaker) - if you don't know how, look in the Help/FAQ section Mod Header Connectors at Front-X.

Worse to worse, you could remove all the contacts from the factory shell and replace them with the contacts from your new case. That way you would continue the ease of having only one connector to mess with instead of a bunch of tiny ones (I often do that with my cases anyway as I'm in there messing around so much) - or you could always buy a shell of the same number of positions (http://www.action-electronics.com is a place to look) . But only use the original shell when your intention is to closet the old case - if the plan is to sell it, then leave it as is.
