Oldest CPU you are running now???

Athlon XP 2400+ that parents use.
I use an Athlon XP 2500+ (workhorse for circuit simulations and data plotting) as I'm typing this. This is about to be replaced this summer with my X2 4200+ though.

why don't you just install win 98 in a VM on one of your other rigs?

During the install, the only sound cards it supports are the original soundblaster, and a few others. Also, I tried the recent win95 version, and set up up to run in win95 compatability mode, and it still locks up.

I am able to play the original C&C as part of the First Decade pack in vista64 just fine.

I got the first decade pack but it's buggy as hell on my computer. I really like the covert operations missions but most of them crash. :|

The original on my 200 mmx work just fine ! Thats why I keep it around.

Its a tie between 1.2 Gig Athlon and an Intel 1.2 gig Tulatin Core Celeron with 512k L2 Cache. The Celeron is a very cool running processor and it is extremely hard to kill.

Oldest server cpu at my parents' house is a Pentium II overclocked to 450 MHz (native 300?). Oldest server cpu at my flat is a Pentium III 866 MHz. Oldest cpu I use as a desktop system: K6 III 400 MHz -- though to be honest I've not powered on that computer in some time. Otherwise, my oldest desktop in use now has an Athlon X2 3800+.

Regarding virtualisation and calls to hardware, that's really the key thing separating the various forms of x86 virtualisation. I recommend reading the primer on AnandTech's IT site.

In a virtual machine, the guest operating system does not have to be supported by the host's hardware. I.E. Even if you can't run Windows 95/98 on that hardware, you can still run it on a VM running on that machine. I do this all the time in situations where I need the ancient OS for some reason. Example: I have an ancient line printer unit where 10 years ago a developer hard coded a driver for it into a Power Builder App. That application is still in use and so is the printer but the driver piece of the application wont run on anything later than Windows 98 - but win 98 can't be installed on any machine I still have. So I Have a Win 98 VM and the whole setup works just fine.
