How about Rogue? That's from 1980.

Yeah, but you are not using the original version from 1980, as that was written for UNIX and in big endian, and completely incompatible with a PC, even using something like DOSBox. You are probably using either at best the 1984 original IBM PC port, or the 1988 port.

Been slowly replaying Bard's Tale (1985) in DOSbox

DOSbox is an emulator. If we are going to include emulators, then I have some oddysey 2 games running on win7.

If not, winquake is the earliest I got running natively.

I got Dunjonquest (1979) running on my brother's Win7 with DOSbox since he's a huge DnD junkie. I have a port of Battlezone (1980s sometime, since it's a port of the Atari version) and the original (1980) running on an emulator. Technically, everyone with Java can play the 1996 Javascript version of Battlezone online. So you have to be under 1996 before you can even be considered competition.

Err, I don't think Doom 3 has any place in this discussion. It only came out a few years ago, well into the XP era.

Myself: Ultima IV and Journeyman Project 1 & 2. Unfortunately, their visuals and resolutions don't translate well to 1440p panels, so I didn't really play them.

...that it was actually asking for the oldest game one has running on their Win7/Win8 system. I must have errantly thought a 9 year old game, being the oldest game on my Win8 system, was an appropriate answer.

I play Nethack on Win 7. It runs with no issues. It is from 1987.

Although it is somewhat regularly updated, so maybe that doesn't count.

Quake II runs fine in Windows 7 but the expansion packs need a extension limit for OpenGL but nVidia's drivers no longer support extension limits.

Doom 3 was 9 years ago? Yeesh, time flies. Still, Doom 3 was a modern game, designed for a post-Win2k 32-bit operating system world. We're probably not going to run into issues installing and running Doom 3 for quite a few years yet.

It works fine on Windows 7 32bit though so I suppose that (1989). Or Maniac Mansion but I don't think it was the original version, and that might have been when I had Vista...
