OLED

I've been reading a lot of info hailing OLED as the future savior of the monitor industry (in terms of image quality, power consumption, and size). I've seen a few pictures of 3" displays by Philips, and I know a few are already being used in mobile devices. However, when do you guys think it will be ramped up to mass production (assuming monitor manufacturers can develop a cost effective processing technique). Also, is this really going to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, or are the fortune tellers blowing smoke up our arses (i.e. is OLED really going to be as bright and true to color as a CRT/plasma yet as thin and possibly even more power friendly as an LCD without response time, screen burn-in, and viewing angle issues)?

oled's dont last very long. well, at least not yet. there are some panels made already that have them, but after a yr or 2, the quality or even brightness dies tremendously. this is what i've read a while ago, so i'm not 100%.

i think maybe around '06 will it get developed enough to take over the market. im skipping the whole lcd thing for now, going from crt to oled.

Yes, I think I'm going to skip LCD altogether, too (except for my laptop, of course). I was tempted because I have a 67 lb 21" Sony CPD-E540/B, and it's making my glass desk bend a little (although it's supposed to support up to 80 lb in the center). I was thinking of selling it, but I know I won't get what I want (does anyone ever)? I saw a couple of the white versions of the CPD-E540 up for auction on eBay, and I think the sellers ended up getting about $200 whereas I think you should get at least $300 for it considering it retailed for $550 + tax and/or shipping depending on where you bought it and considering there are morons who will pay just under retail price but more than the educational discount price for used, large Apple LCD's. I wouldn't go below a 17" LCD, and for a quality 17 incher you're looking at about $400, and I'd be losing resolution, response time, and black level performance.

I?m guessing we will see OLED start to become available in stores in about 2-3 years. Then they will no doubt go through the same phase LCDs are coming out of at the moment. Which was the exorbitantly high price and many technical issues phase. LCDs have made leaps and bounds recently though and are now a very viable CRT replacement.

I sure know I wouldn?t go back to CRT.

For mobile devices they are perfect! There are some portable MP3 players using them (I thought Creative had one) and this display uses almost no power!
Also mobile phones can finally last longer on batteries when using OLED screens.

I've read that Philips made a book consisting of OLED's which was possible due to their flexibility

I just hope it will be as great as we hope right now!
