I cant remember what the name is but they sit at the back of the boat and steel and shout commands or something. This is all coming back from when my sister used to row and I dont remember anything else.
EDIT - I think I remember the name of them, its something like "Cox" or something I think? Can anyone confirm?
The coxswain is only on the 8+1 boats (and I think on the 4+1 also). Its job is to be as lean as possible, and during the weight tests to drink alot of water to reach the minimum weight (and dump that water after the weighting)

No Cock-guy in the 4-man Skulls I don't think , unless I missed him yesterday. Not sure in the 4-man regular (if there is a regular). Definitely ther ein the 8 man boats. He's the guy that keeps everyone in sync, shouts out what's going on, calls for a pace increase, etc.
Rent the movie The SKulls and watch the first few minutes. There's a neat shot of a rowing race and the guy making them jump out of the boat when one oar breaks and stuff.
They expained on TV that he/she also steers the boat if it gets off course. However, this seems like the easiest medal in the Olympics - you pretty much need to be the right size and that is all.
