http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/07/team-usa-to-be-decked-out-in-uniforms-made-in-china/

They are the pride of America — Team U.S.A. — and for the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics in London, they’ll be proudly wearing red, white and blue, from beret to blazer.

The classic American style — shown in an image above — was crafted by designer Ralph Lauren. But just how American is it?

When ABC News looked at the labels, it found “made in China.”

Every item in the uniforms that the U.S. athletes will be wearing at the opening ceremony in London will carry an overseas label.

Nanette Lepore, one of the top U.S. fashion designers, said she was shocked that none of the uniforms had been made in the states. Further, Lepore said that it was “absolutely” possible that the athletes could have been outfitted in U.S.-made clothing. She said U.S. manufactures could have easily made the uniforms — and for less.

Here’s how much the uniforms cost:

Men:
Beret – $55
Tie – $125
Belt – $85
Shirt – $425
Blazer – $795
Trousers – $295
Shoes – $165

Women:
Beret – $55
Scarf – $58
Belt – $85
Shirt – $179
Skirt – $498
Blazer – $598

“Why shouldn’t we have pride not only in the American athletes, but in the American manufacturers and laborers who are the backbone of our country?” Lepore said to ABC News. “Why? What’s wrong? Why was that not a consideration?”

ABC News reached out to Lauren and the U.S. Olympic Committee and asked why American-made clothing had not been selected for the athletes.
The committee said: “The U.S. Olympic team is privately funded and we’re grateful for the support of our sponsors. We’re proud of our partnership with Ralph Lauren, an iconic American company.”
On one hand U.S team is being privately funded, so it is free to choose on what the team wears. For people who may be patriotic or nationalistic.. this may outrage you.

As for me, I really don't think this is that big of a deal though. I mean most of the stuff that people really use come from China, even luxury brands.. I guess their choice is limited.. since RL is one of the sponsors.

Sad thing isn't where it was Made, but the fact that those making it into a controversy would not do anything meaningful to change where it's Made.

So all the people who want to complain about this fire up their Made in China computers and bitch about it on their choice of website that is hosted on servers that were Made in China, while wearing their own Made in China clothing and sitting in their Made in China desk chair at their Made in China desk.

Get the point?

Get over it.

We look like France's girlfriends. It's pathetic.

There is something highly effeminate and European about the uniforms. When I first saw the image (on another forum with less context) I thought more along the lines of preppy high-class Briton wear, but I like yours better. They are pretty cute, though. :$

Taking all our manufacturing jobs and sending them off to China coincides with the massive wealth redistribution that has happened in this country over the last 35 years. It's something that should make true patriots sick to their stomach and true capitalists orgasm on themselves in spasmodic glee. It's something that our grandkids will look back on and hate us for. And swear at us. In Mandarin.

The reason they are made in China is due to liberal policy. If they were made in the USA, they would have to make $8.50+ per hour, plus paid time off, pension, matched SS and disability contributions, etc.

Fuck outsourcing, but I understand why it is done.

Local TV station used my Facebook quote on this.

There question was should the U.S. Olympic Team should have used an American manufacturer for the Uniforms?

I answered

What American Manufacturer?

The 1% has sent all the manufacturing jobs to China.

Liberal idiots like in your state tax the shit out of business and drive them out. Why am I going to pay $10/hr to a chicago half-wit when I can pay $5/day to an Asian who is motivated to work?

Even the beloved company Apple understands this basic math.....

Gawd you're full of shit...depending on the state, they MAY have had to only pay $7.25/hr...and low-end jobs wouldn't have paid time off nor pension.

Why do you hate Americans so much that you'd rather see jobs sent to China than kept here for Americans to do? Granted, they're not great jobs...but it's still better than NO job.

Of course, the 1% being the 1%, they'd probably situated the plants near the border and filled those jobs with illegal immigrants from Mexico.

The US Olympic team should tell the US Olympic committee to get fucked and refuse to wear those ugly "uniforms" until they can provide clothing made in the USA. This is a slap in the face of Americans everywhere.
(I'll bet Mitt the Mormon is loving it)

You must have meant that reply to someone else. I agree that 90% of what we buy should be home-grown. However, federal liberal policy makes that impossible.

But I am sure you would rather see 10% unemployment with a high minimum wage instead of 4% unemployment with people getting off of their ass and at least earning something for themselves instead of waiting for that government cheese check every month.

Of course, you probably think China is the #1 rising superpower because they mandate extreme compensation for unskilled workers.

Why do you hate non-Americans so much that you'd rather see Chinese people starve than Americans increase the value of their workhours?

I used to work at an HP subcontracted factory in California in high school and college. For one it paid like $6.5 and hour at the time right around 2000. And it was almost all Mexican Americans.

Most Americans don't want these jobs for the pay the Chinese and others will take. Or they want benefits and claim workman's comp etc and make it expensive for companies to compete . So if Americans want these jobs back they will have to work in foxconn like conditions for foxconn like money. Or you put up tariffs etc and raise the price of things and do it that way

In the end if it costs too much business will find a Way to make it cheaper. If we couldn't send it to China wed have figured out a way to automate it and who would labor unions etc cry to? Are we going to bemoan outsourcing all menial labor to robots / computers too? I mean effectively that is what China is a place to get rid of the work we don't want to pay extra for. We can cry for the telephone operator and milk man and typing pool people jobs that are now gone too

Huh? In America the minimum wage is $7.25 and there is no kind of requirement for paid time off or pension. You seem to be living in the pre-Reagan America (though min wage was even higher than $8.50 back then).

You have no idea of what you speak. Minimum is state-by-state, and each state also sets is own corporate tax rate.

Add in unions holding the states by the balls, it is no wonder that companies outsource labor. It is too expensive to hire Americans.

Every physically able citizen on welfare should either have to join the Armed Services or work on public projects or manufacturing for a small paycheck. No more free ride.

Unless it would take an American worker 100 hours to make that blazer the whole "it's too expensive to manufacture in America" defense fails quite laughably.

Isn't it true that US has one of the lowest corporate tax rates among the developed nations?

So when is China going to own us again? At least then it would say "Made in the US of China" when they finally take control.
