Went to OfficeMax to buy an Olympus D-550 Zoom currently advertised for $299.99 with Free 64MB SmartMedia card. Store was out of the D-550. The Manager offered the Olympus C-4000 with a Free 64 MB SmartMedia card for the same price, $299.99 saying the C-4000 was on the substitution list. C-4000 on display was marked $449.99. BTW the C-4000 is a 4 Mega Pixal camera vs the 3 Mega Pixal in the D-550.

YMMV but figured saving $150 on the C-4000 with the Free 64MB SmartMedia card was pretty good.

OMG!!! I am totally looking for this camera.. It's the most underrated 4.0 megapixel camera around.. Unfortunately, my officemax DOES have the D-550 in stock. ARGH!

All I did was walk in and ask if they had the D-550, the salesperson went and looked, came out said they were out and looked at a printed substitution list. I looked at it too, sure enough, it had the C-4000 as a substitute for the D-550. Good Luck, and Happy Hunting

HOT DOG! I have been looking/reading about the C4000 for about 3 months now. THIS is one of the best 4 megapixel cameras. Has some of the features found on higher end models. I gotta get me one now! Going to my local OM tomorrow to try and get them to pricematch with an online retailers price of $303. If that fails I will try to see if they will make it a substitue like you have done from the D-550.
Anyone know if OM price matches with online retailers?

Diverdown-

Do you remember if they had any other subs besides the olympus? Just curious.

Thx-

Worked like a charm. I called up the store and spoke with a CSR and asked her if she had any 550's in stock(all sold out in all the stores here in the Bay Area). I asked her if there were any subs I can do it with and mentioned that a friend actually subbed the C-4000, she checked the list and sure enough, it could be subbed. Paid $299 and got the free flashcard too, I tried to have her also add in a comptetitors coupon (Staples $30 of $150) but her manager was there at the counter(doing the price override from $449 to $299) and said that I couldn't because I was making over on this deal, oh wellz but I'm happy, this was at the Union City store, they had one more C4000 left to sub if anyone's interested.

SCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE!!!!

Thank you thank you thank you for posting this.

I've been desperately trying to land a decent deal on a digi-cam before our next child is born (check my .sig for the official countdown) so this couldn't have come along at a better time!

BTW: My local would have taken the Staples coupon, except there is no Staples here in town (yet), so it's not considered competition for this location.
BTW2: Prolly gonna take a jaunt to B'ham in the next couple of days and try to get them to take the coupon.

I got greedy and bought three C-4000's today from 3 different OM's. Coupon accepted twice out of 4 tries. There are plenty of cameras out there and there's no problem getting them for $300. However, some of the sales staff need a lot of convincing to go and check the substitutions list. More than one sales person said "Wow!" as they rang these puppies up. That's when you know you have a great deal!

Thank you very much, Diverdown57!!

Heh...I totally agree!

I've heard that same kind of reaction more times than I can count.
Today...the guy said "That's a DEAL right there. I mean...A DEAL!!! Wow....my wife will kick my butt if I snag one...but MAN that is a DEAL!!!"

Heh heh! I also learned that OM paid $375 for these cameras. I have to wonder if someone made a mistake somewhere back at HO?!

I blame Tallgeese for getting me all hyped up into wanting to buy this.

If I sell this brand new, sealed with 64MB SM on eBay how much do you think I could get for it?

ALRIGHT! This worked out great. I already have a D-520Z that I got last year for $299, so getting this 4meg at a 3meg price, now I don't need to wait til next year for the price to fall. It's my early Christmas present. And I got the free 64Meg mem card with it! So I'll need to take out my 128meg card from my D-520 and use it in this guy now.
This worked at the Everett, WA store with no problems.

Scored one. Much thanks to diverdown57 for the find.

Sales associate and manager were quite shock at the price difference and were in disbelief, but they were cool about it. Used a Office Depot $25 off $75 coupon. At first the manager was iffy about it, but I told her I was going to get the replacement plan anyways, so she let me use the coupon. C-4000 was price adjusted to $274.99 and free 64MB smartmedia card. w0000t!!!!

well I wasn't as lucky as some but I still got the C4000z for $329.00. I called to find out if the local OM was out of the D550's. Sure enough they still had 5 instock. I prepaired for this and brought in a printout from cameratopia.com who is selling the camera for $303.00. Asked the manager if they pricematch with online retailers. Sure enough he takes a look at the sheet with the $303.00 price for the same camera they are selling for $449.00. 1 minute later he says sure I will go grab one. Had to pay s&H of $26.00 but even at that it is a good deal. Didn't get the extra 64MB SM card but ecost.com has the 128MB cards for $49.00 with a $20.00 rebate. Trying to get this camera figured out. MANY MANY settings... liking it already, now if I can just find something to take a picture of!
Take a chance and see if your OM will pricematch with online retailers.

What brand? I'm seeing a Viking SM card for $39.99 with a $10 rebate, but that's it.
