Does this mean you could pull out the cf card and use it in a camera, PDA, etc...? That would be kinda nice, especially for those mp3 players that have CF expansion

No special tools needed. The rubber casing splits in half with a knife and the drive pulls right out from the pins.
It's a Sygate 5gb ST1 drive.

edit: however, i'm having a hard time getting it to show up in windows. It physically won't fit in the digi cam I tried it in.

That's probably because the microdrive is a Type II. Your particular digicam most likely fits only type I cards.

I still can't get windows to recognize this drive I have two card readers that both support type 1 and 2 CF. Neither pick up this drive.

did you format it when it was a "usb drive"

I believe there is a way to format the card in NTFS or something similar when it is in the original packaging to get it to be readable in a card reader. I am not sure about this particular one but this was what needed to be done with a generic 4gb drive that frys had a little while back.
Can the chip in the reader really make a difference? I realize it can if it can only do Type 1 but if it can handle both why would the chip matter?

What controller chip is in THIS flash drive?
