I was just able to order the WD 80GB hard drive over the phone. CSR said no coupons as an instant rebate was being applied. That's okay - I'll take it for $26 after taxes any day. Thanks cmccrkn.

It's backordered (Status = CBO) for me. Guess I'll be heading to the B&M store in half an hour....hoping that they'll have it there.

"Free offer...
Olympus C-50 5 Megapixel Digital Camera
$49.95 Value
Free after Rebates with Tax Purchase!"

Now that would be a deal!

Just got back from the store and I got the hard drive and Khypermedia CDRW. I'm guessing the CDRW is a cyberdrive model, which is ok by me. Can anyone find the $30 that works for the Khypermedia drive? I've only been able to find the $30 Microadvantage drive rebate. I assume the Khypermedia will work for this, as well. Additionally, if I bought a Khypermedia drive during the Black Friday promotion, am I eligible for other rebates/promotions?

I got a little pissed at on of the sales clerks at the check out. She came up and was baggin my purchase and said to the cashier - "I hate Sundays because of all these damn rebates." I wanted to tell her that if OM would stop forcing customers to play the rebate game, we would all be a little bit happier. I kept my mouth shut, but was a little taken aback at how unprofessional her comment was.

How is it fruad? How is 1 okay but 5 is fraud? I mean, I think people that do that suck, but I don't see how it is fraud.

Went in to the Roseville, MN store at opening this morning (10pm) and they were already 'sold out' of the 80GB WDD drives, but I was offered a rain check... wah. Very fishy.

Incorrect.

I would suggest actually perusing Section 1341 and Section 1342 of Title 18. One should have a knowledgable frame of reference prior to offering opinion of how their activities are under the letter of the law when they are in fact not.
It's as saying they are buying it themselves.
A logical circumvention of this situation would be those friends or family members actually purchasing the product themselves.
I've known MANY people that have done this without a hitch. I BET you anything right now that the people who have read the deal on the HD's are doing that EXACT same thing I'm doing.
This does not make this practice legal, of course. The fact that this crime (and it should be monikered that, as it is what it happens to be) is easily exercised by many and often does not carry consequences is irrelevant. Surprising as it may be to hear, there are some who possess a bit of moral fibre, and the intestinal fortitude to declare it when necessary (such as in this thread).

I think it's rather short sited to equate morality with legality. Just because something is illegal, it isn't necessarily immoral. Throughout times there have been many immoral laws in many places, and not obeying them would be morally superior than obeying them.

In an instance such as this I would hesitate to call what he is doing 'immoral'. Is he being a jerk? Yes. However we are talking about a luxury item that no one really 'needs'. Also, if someone did 'need' it he isn't buying all of the hard drives everywhere, he is just getting the ones that are the cheapest in one place I gaurantee you people in that area can still find hard drives to buy. Again, is he being a jerk? Absolutley. However I still think it is rather ridiculous to call it immoral, at least in any SIGNIFICANT sense of the word. It's simply petty. The legality of the issue is so immaterial it's almost nonsensical to bother speaking of it.

And let's not forget the prohibition. Not trying to be an anarchist or anything, but it always amuses me when people act like man's laws were handed down on stone tablets to Charlton Heston by God himself. What he did might be considered rude, but hardly a crime that threatens the moral fiber of the nation. You're just pissed that he went a little overboard on the deal and want to make him seem like a criminal.

It's not like OfficeMax or Western Digital is gonna press charges or anything. The drives are going to get sold and the rebates paid out just the same regardless if one person buys five drives or if five different people buy them. I'm sure Western Digital doesn't mind moving the product and building market share. They probably want to get rid of all this older stock anyway to start making room for SATA product. ANd I'm sure that OfficeMAx isn't crying either, since WD is picking up most of the rebate bill.

If he wants to tie up that much money for the 4-5 months it could take to get back the rebates, so be it. If you weren't fast enough to get in on this deal, and other people got to it first and bought a bunch, TOO BAD. These are hard drives we are talking about, and it is hardly a life and death matter. If I've learned anything, it is that there will always be a better deal tomorrow, because the drives just keep getting bigger and cheaper. This is all just a game to most of us anyway, so don't dis the man for playing better than you.

The only thing I see that he's done wrong is turn this thread into something more fit for the Brag and Moan forum.
I usually agree with laissez-faire, but his actions have hurt two parties. The obvious first are tomarrow's morning deal hunters. By that time the phone will be off the hook with people looking for these, the salespeople will know they're one per person.. last years BF I had to BRIBE some idiot $10 to get one of the 15 loss leader item in his cart. (Seemed better than tattle-tailing at time)

The second party who he hurt (and who we disregard) is Officemax. They have loss-leaders for a reason, to get people into the store and create some goodwill as well as a reputation for good deals. (Much better than Office Depot, but I digress.) If one surveyed the satisfaction at the ferengi's store tomarrow, OM's rate of return would plummet.
A family member (in the store) and I bought one each in advance, so I was somewhat greedy. I may nip at the hand that feeds me, but I don't wave a bloody stump for all to see. I'd love to see the tact he shows his clients, whereever he works. (Guess what my margin was on that transaction, N0013)

One problem with your argument concerning officemax is this: If they were concerned aobut this situation they would limit it to 1 per customer.

Looks like they pulled it from the site. This morning I ordered this by choosing the "Order by Item Number" option from the home page. You could not find the item by using the search function.

I bought one Friday and plan to return/rebuy it. I knew that there would be a problem with this drive concidering the price.

I did try to order a few other things and when I called OM, the CSR told me that everything that I wanted to order wasn't available over the phone. He said that I had to go buy it in-store. I never had that happen to me. I find it improbable that everything that I asked for was OOS.

That's ok. The only thing that I really wanted was the hard drive anyway.

scored a 80gb HDD over the phone after 30 min of waiting, which IMO is much much better then waiting in line freezing or going there twice just to return/rebuy

There must have been 75 people in line at my OM. I was #25. The people in front of me RAN to the HD section. I heard someone in front of me asking about the HD and the manager said at the service counter. The guy only had 3 available, but OM is taking rainchecks. I was #3 to get my raincheck. In and out in a minute! Glad I wasn't first in line to get in the store then last in line for the raincheck. I'm hoping that the drives won't come in until next week that way OM will probably give me the drive for $20 out the door. That would beat a buy before, return later deal.
Congrats to those that did get ONE drive. Poop on the greedy SOBs, you're giving OM a bad rap for always being OOS.

It's snowing here (Greensboro, NC) so when I got to the store there were only a few people there. The manager said they had 3 cases of the $20 AR drives.

You're lucky! At my OM, they're sub'ing Memorex for the Ridata. BUMMED!! I'm not really a fan of Memorex after personal experiences.

For anyone who wants to know: The ridata CDRs are made by Ritek. The HP DVD+Rs are made by CMC magnetics.

Thanks for the info about the DVD+Rs. I'll just wait for some ricoh disks to go on sale.

I like the ricoh too. I picked up a 5 pk of the $1.99 memorex DVD+R from OM last week. I was figuring they'd be ricoh, but to my horror they were CMC. But you know what? They actually burned respectably well. I was surprised. These HP 2.4x ones don't burn that great though.

Does anyone know where to find the rebate for the $10 AR 52x CDRW drive pictured on the front page? It doesn't have a brand name listed.

TIA,

Sal
