Just because someting is prohibited by law, doesn't exactly make it "wrong" in a moral sense. It used to be illegal for african american people to drink out of white people's water fountains in the south. And until a few months ago, sodomy was illegal, too. And let's not forget the prohibition. Not trying to be an anarchist or anything, but it always amuses me when people act like man's laws were handed down on stone tablets to Charlton Heston by God himself. What he did might be considered rude, but hardly a crime that threatens the moral fiber of the nation. You're just pissed that he went a little overboard on the deal and want to make him seem like a criminal.
It's not like OfficeMax or Western Digital is gonna press charges or anything. The drives are going to get sold and the rebates paid out just the same regardless if one person buys five drives or if five different people buy them. I'm sure Western Digital doesn't mind moving the product and building market share. They probably want to get rid of all this older stock anyway to start making room for SATA product. ANd I'm sure that OfficeMAx isn't crying either, since WD is picking up most of the rebate bill.
If he wants to tie up that much money for the 4-5 months it could take to get back the rebates, so be it. If you weren't fast enough to get in on this deal, and other people got to it first and bought a bunch, TOO BAD. These are hard drives we are talking about, and it is hardly a life and death matter. If I've learned anything, it is that there will always be a better deal tomorrow, because the drives just keep getting bigger and cheaper. This is all just a game to most of us anyway, so don't dis the man for playing better than you.
The only thing I see that he's done wrong is turn this thread into something more fit for the Brag and Moan forum.
I usually agree with laissez-faire, but his actions have hurt two parties. The obvious first are tomarrow's morning deal hunters. By that time the phone will be off the hook with people looking for these, the salespeople will know they're one per person.. last years BF I had to
BRIBE some idiot $10 to get one of the 15 loss leader item in his cart. (Seemed better than tattle-tailing at time)
The second party who he hurt (and who we disregard) is Officemax. They have loss-leaders for a reason, to get people into the store and create some goodwill as well as a reputation for good deals. (Much better than Office Depot, but I digress.) If one surveyed the satisfaction at the ferengi's store tomarrow, OM's rate of return would plummet.
A family member (in the store) and I bought one each in advance, so I was somewhat greedy. I may nip at the hand that feeds me, but I don't wave a bloody stump for all to see. I'd love to see the tact he shows his clients, whereever he works. (Guess what my margin was on that transaction, N0013)
