The drive I received today from officemax.com with the pink 8MB cache note has a serial number that starts with WMA8C3. The drive itself shows the model number as WD-1200JB.

The 2MB cache drive I bought at Circuit City 4-24 has a serial number that starts with WMA8C2. The drive itself shows the model number as WD-1200BB.

The UPCs were the same.

I bought 3 drives and all were the 8MB upgrade. S/N on two of them starts with WMACM111, the other is WMACM100. I am not seeing a pattern. Is there any way to tell?

Nope, there's no way to tell. Some have reported that 8C and CM both had 2mb and 8mb buffers. I was unlucky I guess. CM with 2mb, no pink slip. :frown:

That is correct; however, it seems as though far more people who've received the 8MB cache upgrade did so w/ a serial # format of: WMACMxxxxxxx. Of course as you yourself pointed out, yours wasn't a free upgrade and it matched the WMACMxxxxxxx S/N format. A few others w/ the WMA8Cxxxxxxx format have received the free upgrades though.

I happen to have 2 STANDARD EDITION DRIVES sittings in front of me at the moment, one of each S/N format. Since I plan on returning one of the drives, I don't want to open both of them.

I took a gamble, opened the WMACMxxxxxxx drive NOW (which is actually a WMACM11xxxxx), and thankfully it had the "free upgrade" PINK SLIP inside.

The other drive with a a WMA8C3xxxxxx S/N will remain sealed. Anybody got access to an x-ray machine?

My cousin for whom I placed order like 10 minutes after mine has also received a silver label special edition hd with 3 year warranty today. It's strange since order status showed that it's on back order. Guess they ran out of standard ones on west coast real fast (I placed order like 10 past midnight) and started fulfilling back orders with special edition drives

The shipping guy forgot to give me my receipt though and I didn't find any in the box I'll have to call them and see if they can send me another receipt.

BTW my s/n number of special edition (not free upgrade) is: WMACM1237826, manufactured on 14th of march, 2003, model #is: WD1200JB-00DUA3.

so is this hd in the sales flyer or what? i got in on this a few days ago and "secured" the drive. gonna go tomorrow and try and get a refund than have the guy ring me all over again like the guy in this thread said. of yeah, when i bought it i asked the clerk if officemax.com coupons were accepted at b&m and he said yes so the manager better not give me sh!t about it when i go there tomorrow. but if he does, whats the return policy in case i wanna take the drive back?

Why would you hope for that? I will take 4 40GB platters any day

Two 60GB platters is more efficient than 4 40GB platters. The higher the areal density per platter, the higher the speed. Ugh - I wrote that wrong. Now I get my original mistake. :disgust:

160GB WOULD be better than 120 - wouldn't it!?!? I originally meant to say "four 30s."

I think what he meant was that 2x60=120 whereas 4x40=160

Speaking of denser platters, is there actually any way to run a serial through and find out if you got those high density platters? Anybody?

Umm, yes. I realized that when I said:

No, though one would think that if you got one made recently, like my March 7th drive, it would have the 60GB platters.

The BAD thing is that you will probably not be able to RAID a two-platter WD1200JB with an older four-platter WD1200JB.

Try posting over @ storagereview.com. Their forums can tell you almost ANYTHING you'd ever need to know.

Was it announced by WD that they're moving over from 30GB to 60BG platters or something? Hard to believe that all of a sudden they would be able to double the performance of their hard drives.

EDIT: But if it's true, then who knows, maybe it will actually use ata/100 to a good use then

EDIT2: Ok, reading storagereview review of this drive they calaim it has 40GB platters, not 30GB.

EDIT3: DOH, I see now that they are using even 80GB platters. I'm way out of the loop.

EDIT4: Well, here's the transfer rate increase you can expect in case their newer 120GB drives use 60GB platters:

48.8MB/S vs 56.5MB/S in outer zone
and
29.2MB/S vs 32.8MB/S in inner zone.

Hmm, still barely pushing ATA/66

Comparison is actually done to their 200GB SE drive which uses 66GB platters, so just a little bit above 60GB.

>>>Welcome to AnandTech. Now read the rules! And while you're reading... scroll up and read some of the messages in this thread. You may find information that'll point you in the right direction.

Also note that only SOME of the rules are enforced. Many of the self-appointed hall monitors have links in their sig lines that have these coupons.

I just got mine @ Totowa in New Jersey
The guy behind me at the checkout also got the same thing!
There may be 1 more left but they would reserve it for you
I got the 8mb cache version!
They forgot to give the $10 instant rebate though. So, I will have to go back before Sat.

I added the following info to the OP:
1) RebatesHQ (i.e. Parago) has updated the ON-LINE Cendyne $10MIR offer to reflect a VALID REBATE PERIOD (see the REBATE ISSUES section)
2) Q&A's about what WD Serial # formats have a better chance of being a FREE "8 meg cache" UPGRADE have been added (see the FASQ)

I went to OM b&m to try to get the hard drive. When they came out from the stock room it was with the 2 mb cache. I asked if they had the 8 mb version & if I could have it for a substutuion. Was told that since they still had 6 of the 2 mb no sub, plus the rebate wouldn't work.

I decided to pass.

YES! Finally got mine from OM East Brunswick, NJ. But they wouldn't take my 30 coupon no matter what because it was a sale item and that it was 8mb cache. Ill probably just try another store.

Will officemax.com accept call ins for 30 coupon adjustment?

BTW the OM in Woodbridge, NJ got a delivery today and will open up boxes tonight for possible sale late tonight to early tomorrow AM. The OM in Piscataway are sold out but will get another shipment Friday. As for the one in East Brunswick, they may have 4 or 5 left as of 30 min ago.

Where can I get the actual coupon code #.

I had it but I cant find it

well i went there today and got the refund, but theu wouldnt do the offficemax.com coupon. anyway, when they did give me the new reciept, it didnt come with the "rebate reciept". it did come with one last time i bought it but not this time. will this be a problem? they just gave me what looks like a regular reciept. the girl said all i had to do was make a copy of it and send it. another thing that pissed me off was i asked a total of 6 different officemax employees(all from the same store) if they accepted officemax.com coupons and 3 told me yes(one said she had seen it done before), 2 told me no, and the other told me it depends if the manager allows it or not. im gonna try to call tomorrow and talk with the general manager of the store and see whats up with this.

Got my WD80GB SE delivered today via UPS from OM. I ordered the HD and paper clips about 10 minutes after midnight when the sale started. The HD went immediately into CBO and the paper clips were OPN. I never called them to get the $30 off from the sale price or inquire about my order. I didn't think I would get it. The funny thing is they backordered the paper clips, LOL.

I got mine delivered at home from Lawrenceville, NJ. They took the $30 coupon at the store when I ordered it, and had to substitute the Special Edition 8 megger - got the last one in the warehouse! Just installed it. It's noisier than my Maxtor Diamond Plus - has a high pitch whine. Oh well, for 40 bucks who cares! Now I gotta figure out what Win XP did with the other partition I set up. I can only see the C: portion in explorer!
