Wonderful post on your part.
To clarify what
AiRAzN23 is trying to convey:
People over at FW have pointed out that some STANDARD EDITION retail boxed WD 120GIG "2 meg cache" HDD's, upon opening the box, are actually UPGRADED FREE to "8 meg cache" models. I don't know if those HDD's are also automatically upgraded to a 3yr warranty though (I don't think they are).
Furthermore, people over at FW have been raising a sh*tstorm over whether or not the $80 MIR offer is valid on the SPECIAL EDITION retail boxed WD HDD (as the SPECIAL EDITION HDD has a "SILVER" capacity label while the STANDARD EDITION HDD has a "YELLOW" capacity label).
I've posted both view-points in the OP. I'm of the opinion that the PDF VERSION of the rebate form FAILS TO CLARIFY which SPECIFIC MODEL the rebate applies to. On the other hand, once the rebate offer gets posted over at RebatesHQ.com, the WEB-SUBMISSION REBATE FORM will in fact list a SPECIFIC UPC CODE (which applies to the STANDARD EDITION model).
A few things to note:
1) Neither rebate form (PDF form or Parago Web Submission Form) requires a UPC CODE
2) Neither rebate form mentions anything about the COLOR of the CAPACITY LABEL
3) If you submit the rebate using the PDF Rebate Form, IMO OMAX/WD doesn't have a legal leg to stand on so long as you submit a rebate for ANY RETAIL BOXED "120 GIG 7200 RPM" HDD. (The word ANY implies STANDARD EDITION and SPECIAL EDITION).
4) If you purchase a "STANDARD EDITION" drive and inside the box you end up with a FREE UPGRADE to an "8 meg cache" model drive, the opinion over at FW is that this is your best bet REBATE-WISE. You get the faster drive with the STANDARD EDITION retail box's YELLOW CAPACITY LABEL.
The SERIAL # issue is a debate over whether you can determine that a STANDARD EDITION RETAIL BOXED HDD has been UPGRADED FREE to the "8 meg" cache model by inspecting the SERIAL #. The "SERIAL # inspection" is what is actually being debated. So far it's inconclusive. If anybody here knows how to tell (by SERIAL #) that a STANDARD EDITION RETAIL BOXED HDD has been upgraded to an "8 meg cache" model, PLEASE SPEAK UP! Thanks.
