I know what these 'drivers' stand for. These are nVidia reference drivers filled with internet parasites that browse the sites secretly for that genius guy and he gets additional $.

dude shut up. omega has been tweaking radeon drivers for ages and i totally trust every set he has put out. if i had an nvidia video card id get his drivers first thing. if you don't know what you're talking about then don't bother wasting everybody's time by making them read your swill.

Well here's NVnews' thoughts on it

"Just for the heck of it, I installed these drivers, and compared them to the 29.80 drivers. At first glance, the default settings were much better looking on the Omega drivers; however, the LOD is _way_ (cannot emphasize this enough) too excessive. What you end up with is a seriously "hazy" mess. The level of distortion is beyond ridiculous. It actually _nearly_ looks like you're using bilinear filtering, only worse. This becomes obvious once you move a character around, say, in Quake3. Once I set the LOD back to a default setting, I then compared the 2 again, and found virtually no difference whatsoever.

To each his own, but I would never consider using this configuration, especially if image quality is important. If it were possible to set such an aggressive LOD _without_ producing the haze, it would be OK."

Sounds pretty bad to me

wow, seems that the omega driver jus tshuts down mib mapping, or whatever its called that makes textures look blurred far away
More likely it's anisotropic filtering coupled with a very aggressive LOD setting. The problem is that while a heavily negative LOD makes the screenshots look good it sucks in actual gameplay because it causes texture aliasing and texture shimmering.

Remember people, screenshots don't always tell the whole story.

yup BFG hit the nail on the head. Even with an LOD of -1.0 and 8X aniso i get nasty shimmering and aliasing in CS. I find that whenever i enable aniso i have to keep my lod very conservative to get good image quality.

Just leave the LOD at 0 (no bias either way) and it'll be fine. If you need a little bit of a sharper image try -0.5 although personally I wouldn't bother unless I wasn't using anisotropic filtering at all and things looked really blurry.

nVidia's default mipmap settings are pretty good anyway (especially in Direct3D) so really I never bother touching the LOD at all even without anisoptropic filtering.

If you need to sharpen the image, it's far, far better to always use anisotropic filtering to achieve this because it doesn't have any of the negative consequences that adjusting the LOD bias does.

Go to the driverheaven.net forums and read the nvidia win2k/xp forums for an explanation as to why they are down and mirrors.

I tried them and they looked pretty nice, but for some reason my opengl games wouldn't work and I didn't want to bother with it so I just re-installed 29.42.

Has anyone checked if the "shimmering" persists with FSAA enabled? (Quincunx or 4X). I mean, FSAA might be able to eliminate the shimmering, and Omega's page suggests that "the textures look A LOT better when FSAA is enabled, not blurred like before". It's worth finding out.

Dude, shut up. Perhaps Radeon and 3dfx cards need these drivers, but Nvidia cards sure don't. Any idiot can modify .inf file, set the LOD to -2.5, making games shimmery like hell (but look good in still pictures), and enabling multisample masking, without even knowing what it does.

And that's exactly what he did. It's funny there are still some morons who believe higher LOD will make up for AF (while in reality, AF absolutely needed w/higher LOD) so, in his infinite wisdom, he decided to leave it "off" and even warns against it.

First off Leon, nobodies putting a gun to anyone's head to d/l and use these, so shut your face.

Secondly, Booster WAS speaking swill I believe. Or at least a close variant of it.
