In little Keene, NH Walmart had 100. The secret sale stayed a secret sale until three people showed up looking for the laptop and/or the HD-A2. No notice about the Secret sale at all. Here it ought to be called the Dumb sale. It went like this: "You have 100 units in the back." Saleperson replied "oh." So she looked and returned with four. "They're $199." "No, they're 99.80." She stared at the sticker-- "Ring it up...." It rang up for $99.80.

So at 0730 there were 98 left.

Thanks for the heads-up OP.

Yep, it's real. I live close to a Wal Mart in Virginia Beach. I got there at 7:45 and there was a line of about 20 people. Most seemed to be there for the laptop. They had plenty of those and I saw a whole stack of the Toshiba players. I waited in line til a little after 8 and the line was moving pretty rapidly. I only saw people leaving with the laptop. Then I walked away. I decided against it because of the cost of HD discs. I don't see myself buying too many because of the price and rental selection isn't too great right now (I don't subscribe to netflix and don't plan to). Oh well, I'm probably going to regret it. But here's a confirmation that it exists in VB. Good luck.

So, is anyone picking up any $15 movies? (Even if I could get them, I probably wouldn't get more than a couple. The ones I like I already own, and the rest don't seem all that interesting to me.)

Clerks 2
Lucky # S7even
Pulse
Failure to Launch
4 Brothers
Italian Job
Sleepy Hollow
Casino
12 Monkeys
Backdraft
Big Lebowski
Sea Biscuit
Alexander Revisted
Blood Diamond
Full Metal Jacket
The Last Samurai
Swordfish
Unforgiven

That's stupid. I don't blame her though. I blame her management for poor/no preparation, and Wal-Mart head office for not getting the word out properly.

Remember though:

1) It's a good upconverting DVD player as well, and priced similarly to ones that don't support HD DVD.
2) It comes with 5 free HD DVDs as part of a mail in deal.

Went this morning and they had plenty - but priced $187. Apparently we're one of the states that "can't sell it below cost".

What a load of crap.

Where abouts? I lived in the UP (Gwinn area) for 4 years. Anywho, I went to my Wally at 5:30 a.m. this morning Chicago time and while there were about 10 people standing around the counter the associate told me that they were NOT bringing anything out of the stockroom until 8:00. Well that did me alot of good since it's now 8:02 and I'm typing this at work. isgust;

Scored one easily. No lines. No sign anywhere about the reduced price. My store didn't have a display for the reduced price movies. An associate in electronics knew nothing about the 5 free movie rebate, nor did it print out at the register. Going to check Toshiba's rebate form and make sure I can get the movies.

Was the 5th person in line at Store #1503 in Ohio at 6:30am. I was really just the second person that was there for the HD-DVD player. Most people wanted the Laptops. THey only had 2 of the TVs, which went right away, and when I left at 8:30 they had about 7 laptops left and 9 HD-DVD players. Probably 20+ people in line near 8am and a few trickled in later.

They only had 1 of the HD-DVDs that were on sale for $14.96 out so a group of us made the manager go research it and he was supposed to bring them out after he said he found the list. Waited for at least 15min and he hadn't came back so I just left and will check back later.

I can't believe some of you got to buy it before 8am! We had to wait in line to 8:00am on the dot!

awesome! Picked up one this morning, $107 out the door. No disks. But there's always the Sears deal on the A3 if you get lucky on BF.

Remember - WI, OK, UT, HI, and Puerto Rico cannot sell units as loss leaders. Hence the $185 price.

In NJ, one WalMart I visited began sales at 7am (when they opened) on all sale products -except- the laptop -- which for some reason they held back until 8am -- and the other store handed out "tickets" for items but refused to -sell- them until 8. 'Guess they met some corporate rules with that silliness, but it only benefited those who could only get an item because someone else couldn't hang around until 8!

Each store was restricting purchasers to a single unit of anything, thus requiring my visit to a second store as I'd promised to pick up an A2 for friends who couldn't be there at 8am.

Very short lines at each store, and most folks were there for the laptop as reported above. At 6:25 I was third in line at the first store, and at 7:20 I seemed to be about the third picking up a ticket at the second store. The stores were similar in size, but one had a single 50" HDTV and 20 A2's, while the other store had 3 HDTV's and nine A2's; the laptop numbers were also uneven (though I forget the precise numbers).

FWIW: 'Had the option of picking up the Sanyo 50" plasma [720P] TV's for $998, but it didn't look appealing when compared to other TV's on display: I'm guessing it was their up-conversion of the store's SD feed, but it looked very grainy(*) compared to the adjacent Samsung (bottom-of-their-line) 720P LCD. Then again, the Samsung looked un-sharp, like it had its sharpness setting de-emphasized. 'Had I known I'd have the chance at the 50" model, I'd have looked around for reviews/comparisons before this a.m. [Then again, the Sanyo's an in-house brand, and how many WalMart's have a decent feed for their HD-TV's?!]. That "graininess" was present in other Sanyo's, and a few other products; and the lack of graininess was also present in several companies' displays.

(*) There must be a technical term for it, but the "grainy" I'm referring to is this: the multiple plasma (720P) pixels presenting a single SD pixel were AS A GROUP -averaging- a stable color, but within that group the INDIVIDUALLY pixel colors were -changing-! It's like there was dithering going on, but with each frame the dithering changed: each pixel within the group seemed unstable, seemed to be dancing between differing colors. This was apparent at a distance of several feet from the screen, and unsettling to my eyes. Perhaps it's their solution to avoiding "jaggies", and to avoiding the look of some HD TV's where an SD signal looks smeared (like you're watching through a screen smeared with Vaseline). Or perhaps it's an artifact of the cr*ppy/noisy store signal.

Got to the store at about 7:30 this morning as was the 5th person in line. They were selling them out of the layaway or return counter in the back of the store. the store definitely knew about the deal. The line quickly grew to about 20-30 people. Most were there for the laptop, but the A2's went quickly as well. I tried to buy two, but they wouldn't let me.

Also, they didn't get their crate of $15 movies in. No idea on the ETA.

Still very happy to have picked up this player for $99 though. But I guess the Toshiba freebies are gonna take 6 weeks to show up.

PS - Anyone wanna buy a Samsung HD850 upconvert? It does 720p/1080i. Don't need it anymore.

Sault Ste. Marie

Woah, way north. I would bet the Gaylord WalMart will have plenty of these. Sometimes it pays to live in rural America.

I didn't order but the total came to $115 and change with shipping and tax. Still not a bad deal if it is sold out locally.

I picked up three today.
2 at one Walmart at 7:15am, then one more at another Walmart down the road on the way to work. They did not sell them till 8am at the 2nd Walmart and there was a line of about 12 people.

Edit 105 out the door in cincinnati

Also just a note Toshiba has new firmware out that allows for 1080p on this player. So the 1080i v. 1080p point is now moot.
Firmware Update Version: 2.5

Applicable Models: HD-XA2, HD-A20, HD-A2, HD-A2W, and HD-D2.

Overview: As part of our commitment to provide world-class service to our customers, Toshiba is supplying this firmware update for use by purchasers of Toshiba HD DVD Player models HD-XA2 and HD-A20. This firmware update includes support for 1080p/24Hz OUTPUT, additional OSD languages, improved network connectivity supporting the download of web-enabled network content associated with certain HD DVD discs, and also addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related issues identified by Toshiba.

Just download the free HD DVD form from Toshiba. The deal lasts until Feb. 2008.

That is incorrect. Firmware 2.5 does NOT add 1080p24 output for the HD-A2. It added it for the A20 and XA2.
