Just got me a LG BD-ROM/HD-DVD drive for my PC today...and my breathe is being taken away.

Just got done watching Jet-Li's FEARLESS...and it almost made me piss my pants. I know a lot here probably own Blu-ray and have gotten over the "wow" factor...but I had no idea it was THIS good.

Watching these movies on my Sony 34XBR960 (flagship CRT...best in the business) is just jaw dropping.

For those who care I got some pretty good movies that are favorites and I think are good choices for Blu-ray experience:

FEARLESS
300
The Matrix
The Chronicles of Riddick
Serenity

Anyone have any other good Blu-ray movie recommendations?

Well I haven't really experienced blu-ray yet either. I don't watch many movies though.

I'll stick to my DvD. Too much detail is sometimes bad. You'll regret it when you start to notice moles and other unsightly smudges from otherwise beautiful actors.

Why yes, yes it is.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'd avoid Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in Blu-ray, my fiance bought it and we both agreed it looks super fake because everything is too clear and you can tell where the green screens are, etc.

I also just picked up a blu-ray player about a week ago. I love it and can't get over it. I am already up to 22 blu-rays. Check out inetvideo.com if you haven't already. They have really good deals on BRs.

I think I'm going to wait for burners to dip below $75 before buying. I anticipate it might be a while.

I bet video quality is great, though. Then again, I'm still pretty happy with DVD. I've never really been a big home theater person.

I have the smaller 30XBR910 (same tube but higher density) and I had to stop watching BDs on it because the overscan was so bad that I couldn't even see menu options or progress indicators on many BDs. Instead, I watch most on my KDL-52XBR2.

I have an extensive BD collection and the first "MUST HAVES" that come to mind are Apocalypto & The Prestige (plus anything Pixar).

Overscan was an issue for me, but using the Catalyst Control Center for my ATi HD4870 has an overscan adjuster...so overscan is no longer an issue. I can use any resolution all the way up too 1920x1080 if I adjust overscan.

I got my blu-ray a couple months back during Black Friday (about 80 bucks). Now I can't stand watching a DVD. The quality is too low after being too use to blu-ray.

At first I stuck with DVD and never planned on hitting blu-ray for a LONG time. But I took that chance.

Honestly comments like these are retarded. Every blu ray i've watched so doesn't have some super close up of a mole or something lol. Its about having a clear picture and vibrant colors. I've never seen a blu ray yet where I thought their was to much detail.

Not to mention the fact that it was never a problem theatrically. 35mm film or digital theater is WAY beyond even Blu-Ray.

I'm waiting for blu-ray movies to retail at $10 or less before I even consider a blu-ray.

There are many $10 BDs, including goodies like Terminator 2. I'm pissed off that so many DVDs retail at $18-$25.

Yup, my line is when the writers and media become affordable.

Id sure like 50GB discs for backups though.

I got it last week for 85 bucks.
Am totally unimpressed. But I knew I would be. Already saw it in Best Buy and some other places. I knew it would only make a difference if they deliberately put extra effort into the Blu-Ray version and gimped the DVD version.
They did exactly that with King Kong, so they could use it as a demo to push blu-ray.

I've already made this rant before and it pisses off the fanboys, so I'll keep it simple:
Resolution is NOT the same thing as image quality, and most people dont know the difference. When they see a movie specially designed for blu-ray they think its the higher resolution that makes it look better. They dont know that the image quality of the DVD version was deliberately lowered just to make the blu-ray seem better.
Blu-ray only guarantees higher resolution, NOT image quality. Image quality is pretty much hit or miss with most movies. They want you to assume you will get both and thats why you should buy all Blu-ray stuff.
I bought Princess Bride and Resovior Dogs (both the super-duper special Blu-ray editions) from walmart for dirt cheap. They are not superior quality and the higher resolution is pretty much wasted. Also, you can see an aweful lot of grain & speckles that dont exist on DVD movies. I was able to compare both to the DVD versions at the exact same time and its really nothing special, even with HDMI.
For reference, my DVD is connected by component, running at 480p.

Try watching Sin City if you havent, my jaw dropped... When I saw the DVD version I thought it was pretty good but the blu ray version makes it look like garbage, the detail, smoothness, colors are all amazing

(I watched it on a 46" sony bravia for the record)

Maybe that's your problem. Were you as cheap with your TV?

You DO realize the DVD format means the resolution is just less than half that of Blu-ray right? It has nothing to do with the production house's intentions.

Also, you can see an aweful lot of grain & speckles that dont exist on DVD movies.

It's called "graining" and sometimes it's intentional.

I think the first movie I saw on Blu-ray was Lord of War. I couldn't get over how different/vibrant the colors looked - stunning. And if I am right, that's not even supposed to be a reference-quality disc.

I got a PS3 a couple weeks ago, and BR is fantastic. I already own Spidey 3, Transporter 2, Terminator 2, and Harry Potter order of the phoenix. They all look nice.

I rented Ratatouille and Wall-E. The animated movies even look better than the non-animated

I'm sure it is. Still, I'm in no hurry to get it. Movies watch pretty good in SD.

Blu-ray on a good HD CRT must be amazing. Most of the people who complain that they don't need Blu-ray are playing on shitty 34" LCDs. lol
