The stuff I do does not involve the workstation beyond using it to get to the systems I need.

The laptop is mine, it's my personal powerbook. I'm not allowed to put it on the network, and frankly, I wouldn't want it on the network. :Q

Yes but that would assume he had enough rights to modify his IP configuration to whatever is needed to preform that operation. What if his workstation has dhcp? He needs static for transferring files with a crossover cable.
