No, he really did die, the series has gone on a good bit past that book (Currently, 18 books). Through book #13 (or #14, not sure which) Chewbacca is dead, Han and Leia don't like each other, Anakin is dead, Jacen has been "converted" sort of and Jaina has gone to the dark side

There is a 7 8 and 9 already out there. They were written by Timothy Zahn. An excellent trilogy. If you like star wars, I highly recommend them.

Is it a series?? This is the first SW book written by RA Salvatore. I don't know if it's part of a series or not.

Zahn's Star Wars books are the only ones I'd confidently recommend to anyone besides the original 3 books. I have Kevin J. Anderson's Jedi Academy trilogy but they don't measure up to Zahn's stuff IMHO. The other Star Wars books out there that I've read are so-so. Didn't Zahn write more Star Wars books after the first 3, or am I smoking crack?

DAMN!! I guess it is a series!! There's like 20 books in the New Jedi Order series.

Lucas has stated he will not make 7,8,9 since the direction taken by authors is very different than his.

However, I can guarantee he will allow someone to do those movies...he is probably in the process now of determining who's views will be best on film.

i mean, i feel like franchise-based books are really easy to sell so they arnt always good writing/stories. often ive found they are scared to have things happen.
where would be a good place to start?

As I said above, I would definitely check out Timothy Zahn's books. Very well-written stuff that starts a short time after the end of Return of the Jedi. "Heir To The Empire" is the first book in the trilogy that he wrote. I believe he wrote a couple more books after the trilogy, but haven't read them.

There's a new Drizzt series out.

A Thousand Orcs is out and The Lone Drow comes out in October.
