Yes, taxes will go up. And you won't have an insurance premium. Between what I'm paying and what my employer is paying, premiums are more than my federal income tax. The benefits paid are less than 30% of the premium cost. So the insurance company is pocketing the bulk of the money. I'd like to take my chances with a single payer system. The current system is a failure, a failure this nation simply can not afford to continue with; it costs too much and is destroying American competitiveness.
I could care less what my employer pays. What i know is that as a single person I pay $1,440 per year for insurance. If we do single payer its likely my taxes would go up at least 5-7% (conservatively - I think 10% is not out of the question) which now means I'm paying a hell of a lot more each year for insurance. Look at the tax rates for people in coutnries like Canada. No thank you.
Additionally, you do realize there are many many not for profit insurance companies out there right? And even for profit companies only make 2-3% margin typically. It's simply not a very profitable industry. Pharmas on the other hand tend to average about 25-30% profit.
European countries are really hurting under the stain of national healthcare. Considering our land mass in the US it would be even worse. There is a reason why every healtchare professional hates medicare/medicaid. It's not efficent or effective but somehow they wlil manage something 10x larger. No thanks.
