I can understand thinking the movie was not that good if you hadn't seen Firefly first, but in context it was a good movie... :'(

I'm not sure I could forgive it even with any context, there's just so many clichés in there. I might accept it like the final battle in BSG (2004 series), which was also pretty poor, but not as bad as Serenity IMO.

I e-mailed some friends about it when I watched it, here is what I wrote:

Just watched it. My god, what a load of generic hollywood sci-fi fluff. It may have been better if I had seen the Firefly series first, but considering that's written by Whedon as well, I think I will probably give it a skip.

Halfway through the movie, I was wondering whether it was meant to be tongue-in-cheek or taken seriously. It's like watching Buffy (in terms of humour mainly) but the vampires are 'reavers', which are meant to be some sort of super aggressive, drooling man-eating zombies yet they can fly their own ships.

Another example of what makes this film so... what's the word... I'm not sure, but here goes:

Good guy gets a message from (ex-?)-girlfriend, which he knows is a trap, yet goes anyway. Ok, fine. Good guy turns up. Girl finishes meditating/whatever, and says "I didn't think you would be stupid enough to show up", and lights a little stick, and when asked what she's doing, she says that she's saying a prayer for good guy. Then the bad guy turns up.

After some talk, good guy and bad guy start fighting. Good guy gets his ass kicked, but of course he doesn't have any long-lasting injuries yet, and at that exact moment, girl confirms that she didn't light an incense stick, but it's actually some sort of flashbang, and good guy and girl get away while bad guy is dazed.

Corny? Bad/thin script? For lack of a better word, I'll go with "crap".

If they hadn't ended it, we wouldn't have Castle.

Major Castle spoiler, read at own risk :
Now that Castle and Beckett are together it's on the way to the end, since the "will they or won't they" suspense is gone.

Give it 2 more seasons and let's get Firefly back! I'm sure they could find a place for Stana Katic in Firefly Reborn anyway.

Great show and movie. TV execs are Bean Counters(read: don't know a Good show from Bad).

I never saw the show but I turned off Serenity within 20-30 minutes. One of the very few movies that I just couldn't watch the whole way through.

I've only heard good things about the Firefly series. Admittedly I ended up watching Serenity first (someone wanted me to watch it, they thought it was the best movie ever)... my god, that's a bad movie.

It was a very good ensemble western show put into a sci-fi setting on television.... As for the movie it was decent however since the major plot points of the tv show (which should have been revealed over 3 or 4 seasons) was compressed into a single movie; it's not going to be perfect.

Joss Whedon however does quality writing for shows centered around ensemble casts. As for the cheesiness yes in a lot of his works it is intended...

Yup. Joss Whedon is a creative genius. The cheesiness is tolerable because its acknowledged by the humor of the characters and is mostly deliberate. Buffy and Angel are prime examples.

Firefly was a great character driven drama. The fact that it was sci-fi was secondary.

Bring back Firefly and all the good shows, like Deep Space Nine. SG-1 needs a revival too, but please, less of the 'racing to find a cure for a disease we unearthed on a new planet.' episodes.

Actually, that goes for all these series, considering that
Firefly's Reavers were kind of a disease storyline, even though it was manmade
.

Madness. SG-1 lived way too long. A new SG series? Sure, so long as it isn't SG:U all over again. SG-1's charm was in its refusal to be excessively dark.

DS-9? No way. That series ended perfectly.

Firefly? Hell yeah! I'd love to see more firefly.

Basically, we just need another good Sci-Fi series. There's nothing on TV that I know of right now.

Edit: By sci-fi, I really mean "space opera"

Agreed. Stargate went through nearly every possible sci-fi enemy/doomsday scenario (several more than once), anyway. A new Stargate would probably be either too much like the original in plotlines/arcs or otherwise be dark drama heavy like Stargate: Universe, which I didn't like because I didn't care for a single one of the characters at all.

Right, Space Opera! Another Babylon 5 works too!

But as for Stargate, or anything else, it needs to be dark. At least as dark as Firefly.

I watched about half of season 1 of SG:U, before I bailed. I had the same realization as you: I decided that I wanted everyone except the fat kid to die horribly and that I didn't like watching the show for that reason.

I hear it got better later on, but I was checked out at that point. And I was one of the people who watched EVERY SG thing up to that point, including both direct to DVD movies.

Same here. Universe just killed the Stargate franchise for me midway into the season.

I enjoyed it and would like to see more. There was a good deal of cheese though. (why the hell can't anybody make a sci-fi without cheese?!!!! seriously) Even the theme music was cheesy and the lyrics were very shallow. They had nothing to do with the show... it was just some randomness thrown together. I remember the lyrics repeating something like, "can't take the sky from me"... nothing to do with the show. Superficial fluff.

If it could be done again with a little more seriousness it could be great. The show was on the right track though.

There was a TON of ground left to cover in DS9 when it ended though. I had no problems accepting the first few books of the Relaunch as canon--those really stayed true to the series and introduced some interesting characters. I really need to get back to those soon.

About Firefly and Serenity, I find that most people who don't like them either don't like Whedon's distinct style or won't watch anything remotely sci-fi. The former, I can understand. The latter, their loss.

WAtching Serenity without having watched Firefly first would make it an odd movie. However, it did tie the series together...and ended it pretty well.

I was very sad at how much they rushed it I really wanted to find out
HOW the shepherd knew so much about crime and why the alliance doctors treated him when he was shot...

Yep. There was a lot more to him than the show ever discussed.

Show was meh. Movie was good.

SG1 could have been rebooted easily. Atlantis and Universe were taken off the air at their peak.
