What's the correct way to deal with them? Do you try to scoot them into a box or something?

That what I do for small ones. Though I like to use clear containers so I can look at them before releasing them. Cover the spider with the container then slip a piece of paper or cardboard under it.

i see them all the time outside on the patio. you find them at night, after they've built their webs for the night. their webs are the extremely heavy, ugly looking ones very low to the ground.

we also get them in our shed. since it's dark most the time in there, they just string webs constantly. for awhile there was one sitting just below the light switch in one of the sheds. i'd go in there and turn on/off the lights several times a day, and she wouldn't move.

Tarantulas are very fragile, I had one as a pet about 20 years ago.

They are also pretty lax when you handle them, this one was coaxed onto the end of a flyswatter and I just carried it outside. If I dropped it along the way it probably would have burst or lost some limbs.

The other critters are going to be taken care of tomorrow, I bought some really nasty stuff for outside and some safe stuff for inside (diatomaceous earth). I would do it today but the winds are in the 35mph range.

Do tarantulas use their webs for something in particular? They don't trap and ensnare their prey like other spiders. They actively hunt down their food. But in pet stores and the like I have seen that they do produce messy webs like you said.
