4. The potential for advancement and the potential for commission is huge. Monthly base is enough to live comfortably as a single male.

Sometimes there is a lot of administration bullshit and deadlines that arbitrarily mess with things.

3.

Money is not bad, but nothing special, my 401k match isn't bad at all. The amount of time off I get is great. My health benefits were fantastic, now I'd say they are average. I like what I do, I like my boss and coworkers. My only real glaring problem with this company, is even though it is in the top 25 on the Fortune 500 list, there is very little chance for advancement, at least not at the campus I work at. If there were more IT openings here I'd make it a 2.

I voted 3. We are a little less paid than others, our insurance sucks (at least it's very cheap), but hours are very flexible and the co-workers are great. Salary is still good, benefits decent right now.

As soon as I personally start 'hating' or even 'dis-liking' my job is when I immediately move on even if I have to do a ton of personal development.

I was stuck between 1 and 2, figured since my job is not 100% perfect and I'm not making 100k I'd go with a 2.

Love my job, it would take a lot for me to move out of it. Interestingly it was not exactly the career path I had in mind. Started off as a help desk tech, then server tech, which was right up my alley. Then a NOC position came out and I decided to try it out and it's been a year this month now and I love it. It's more telephony than anything, but I've been learning a lot and the telco side is really interesting too.

The job itself is awesome. Rather laid back, basically answer the phone (mostly techs and internal staff) and monitor the network, and act on any alarms/issues that happen. It's shift work, we have 3 different type of shifts. 12 hour days, 12 hour nights and 8 hour days. When I end up with lot of 12's I end up with lot of time off. For example I worked 6 night shifts in a row not too long and ended up with 7 days off in a row. No other job offers this. It would take a lot to get me to quit this for a 8*5 job. The pay is also very good for what we do, and the shift work gives us various premiums on top of it. I make 30/hour but there are various premiums such as nights, sundays, holidays, and they all stack. Working a night, that is a holiday, and also a Sunday, is pretty big bucks. My pay checks are typically $1,600 even when I don't work holidays. Considering that the job itself is very low stress I can't really ask for more. Because I make so much I don't have any debt other than the mortgage, which I pay at an accelerated rate.

Even though server/networking is more up my alley, I actually like this job way better than server tech. I'll stick to playing with network switches and server stuff at home and play with phone switches at work.

5. There are days where it's very busy and there are days where it's endless down time...

I don't mind the busy days, but not knowing when they're going to come makes it hard to work on side projects (aka homework). But the hours are fine and work well with my schedule at college. The pay is fine for what it is. The hours are fine too. But, it's not like I learn a lot or really advance my desired career path. :/

That's historically what I've done too. I'm not one to complain to managers -- if I am unhappy and don't like the place, I just leave because I generally just don't trust management enough to sit down with them and discuss my grievances.

Unfortunately for me, our CIO and manager scheduled a meeting with me on Monday and it is going to turn into one of "those" meetings. I'll just smile, nod, tell them I'm happy, and then go back to my desk and pull up indeed.com.

The thing I'm finding is that a lot about succeeding in life is not just how well you do your job, but how well you shift and misdirect blame onto others. It is not enough to simply do everything in your role perfectly, people who fail are all around you and are unable to take any personal responsibility for their failures, so they conjure up continuously innovative ways to shift blame onto others. Being able to misdirect that blame misdirected to yourself is an important skill in surviving any business. Office life sure is a much more sordid cutthroat state of affairs than the clean cubicles and white dress shirts would have one believe.

I like it, and like most of the people I work with. Not a big fan of all the corporate BS that has to be done but all big companies deal with that crap. If I was at a different location I'd probably be a 5 or 6 but I lucked out getting where I am.

The old saying of "It isn't what you know, it is who you know" is one of the most accurate statements ever invented, isn't it?

The new management in my place seems to be a couple of cutthroat individuals who love to tell employees how important they are and that their input is vital, but they just ignore it. The meeting Monday I referenced earlier is because they want to fire my contractor and want me to talk them out of it, I think, and also to explain my Sharepoint strategy for the organization. I'm sorry, but I shouldn't be explaining a goddamn thing to them -- they've made it clear that they're responsible for "strategy" so they should STFU and develop one unless they want to promote me.

Today I like it because I'm headed down to Australia, other days it's hit or miss, but never worse than a 5.

Such a negative thread, why would you hate your job? if you hate it do something about it, there are ALWAYS options if you are willing to work hard, stop making excuses. If you hate it just for the sake of hating then get help.

“Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude” - Zig Ziglar

why would ANYONE enjoy work? I have yet to understand how anyone could ever enjoy work.
there are FAR better things to do with ones life than work..

Now if sitting on the beach with a hot blonde on my arm drinking Mai Tai's in Waikiki was a job then sign me up.

I give it a 3. I like what I do, and the pay is pretty decent. I've had plenty of opportunities to move up (and have done so). Only bad part is that the industry is unstable, so lots of ups and downs that get to be nerve wracking at times.

1-3, depending on how I'm feeling (US Army). Sometimes when I really don't want to get up in the morning it might spike to a 7 or so but that doesn't last long

7. Cause the pay is lousy, average benefits, most employees are okay, my "manager" is great, but my boss sucks ...

The only reason I still keep the job is because the salary is more than minimum wage and the work hours are flexible with my school hours.

seconded; however, I'm currently hovering at a 4 right now. surprisingly nobody is bitching about things. Once busy season kicks off I'm sure it will be back to the 6-8 area.

As soon as I put in my time I'm out of here. How anyone can become a lifer in public accounting is beyond me. Good experience though.

Its been worse, just glad im not around people I wanna choke 24/7 and if I ever need extra cash theres always more work available, as much as I want to be exact.

Took a while for me to adjust to the career change a few years back, I hated the process but as with any new gig theres a lot to learn. Id give it a 10 for zero stress and a six for pay scale. Id rather spend more time at tollerable jobs than less time at more stressful gigs. I dont have the patience I used to when I was younger and im not about to spend my days biting my tounge doing something I do or dont enjoy.

I've been on my own for just over a year and could never see myself working for anybody else ever again. I wish the money was more consistent but I knew the first 3 to 5 years would be rough.

Used to be a 8 or 9 but lately it's been more like 4. It's an easy job, and I love everyone from my boss down - but in general things don't feel right for the last year or so.

As a CPA at a large accounting firm I'd say about 6-8 depending on the day. But the work environment here is famously toxic.

I spoke with a few auditors in person and they started out with KPMG and none of them, zero, lasted more than 5 years. Are they (big 4 - KPMG, DnT, EnY, PnC) that bad?

Oh were to begin...

These are pretty accurate descriptions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAT3dZnxbYY and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGEfIkhvADU

But I've seen that the experience is generally worth a few years of misery. You do get to work with smart, young people and develop a good network.

tl;dr: Subject to continous review, endless projects, meaningless make-work audit procedures, long hours, low $/hr pay, culture that rewards politics over real talent, clients that mostly hate you, etc.
