On living in Los Angeles

in an ideal world you'd live like Jenna Marbles in Santa Monica which is about as nice as city life can be (anyplace on Eatrh--trust me I've worked significant timespans nearly EVERYwhere on this entire globe except Antarctica)

Whatever you do don't live in the San Fernando Valley (smog & crowding & general shit) nor in Venice beach. Again - yeah rents are lower but DO NOT LIVE IN VENICE BEACH - there, I did my public duty!

If roommate situation is possible in Brentwood or Santa Monica, or better yet, Pacific Palisades or Malibu...then do that. My 4 years as a UCLA Grad Student I lived a year on Arizona St. in Santa Monica, and another year in PP and more years at Malibu (County Line surf spot) =that was surf/bikini babe/sex heaven...almost 1/100 as good as here in Montecito by Santa Barbara. Pacific Palisades has an area generally called "the alphabet streets" that's a little less expensive...little o9ld early-1900s houses...so maybe go in with roommies on a rental house there.

UCLA sits amidst Beverly Hills, Holmby Hills (Playyboy mansion), BelAire (the big movie stars), Pacific Palisades (even bigger movie stars, Spielberg, etc.), Mandevile Canyon/Santa Monica...just by Malibu (even bigger movie stars). REALLY hard to find reasonable rent in that area..but I ONCE DID IT>>YOUR FRIEND CAN DO IT><<<<PERSEVERANCE.

As a VERY last distasteful resort, there's a semi-awful area just north of LAX called "Westchester" and a grubby filthy "beach" (awful place) community on the shitty (south) side of marina del rey called Plata Del Rey. Last resort. Or if your friend is homosexual then West Hollywood. DO NOT RENT IN VENICE BEACH!!!!!!

If you come to LA and say the food sucks then I just don't know. LA is known for having world class food. Even something simple as some of the best Asian food and Mexican food at small places.

that was my impression.

In those regards it isn't a lot different than most big cities.

Though I would say that LA has more of a douchebag problem than an asshole problem. Severe cases of assholishness is more of a east coast issue....particularly Boston.

LA has good food, it cannot be denied. It's a little harder to ferret out exactly what you want sometimes since the metro is spread out but it is there.
