On living in Los Angeles

I know someone who's moving to LA, most likely in July. She'll be a transfer student to UCLA and as I understand it, she'll be eligible for in-state tuition if she stays in Cali for a full year, mom is also a Cali resident, and proves she has ties to Cali and cuts off ties to prior residence (ie change of billing addresses, driver's license changes).

Any advice or suggestions on living in LA, whether it's housing or websites/guides/publications? I already bought "the Cheap Bastard's Guide to Los Angeles and will recommend Time Out Los Angeles to her.

She can become a resident after one year if she's didn't move there for the purpose of going to school. If she's going to UCLA during that year they probably aren't going to go along with the change of residency. There are thousands of out-of-state students going there and they must pay out-of-state tuition rates during their entire studies. Only people who aren't hit with that are members of the armed forces.

If she's banking on that lower tuition she'd better speak with an admissions counselor about her set of circumstances to get the exact requirements for in-state residency. http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/forms/residenceclass.pdf

No, more so they can charge more tuition to make up for budget cuts in recent years. Well known fact out of state admissions are up.

Nothing anyone would consider remotely cheap is remotely close to UCLA, but the area is really nice.

But student housing in my experience is quite good. Lots of rental options near the area as well, though I wasn't much a fan of living around there. Lots to do though. Traffic through the whole area sucks as you might imagine.

SEE!!! if someone from NJ says LA is Bad, that really should tell you something
LA proper sucks, and truth be told I'd probably rather live in NJ than most parts of LA, but other areas of socal are vastly superior to pretty much anywhere on the east coast. Only my opinion, of course.

Lived in the Bay Area for a number of years, and have been to LA 5 or 6 times... Ultimately, neither are where I want to be - though for different reasons.

...but we're getting off topic, since I was just wisecracking (as usual) ^_^

because LA is awesome and everyone wants to live here

And that's the problem we have, it's so awesome, too many damn people live here so we get traffic, but then in turn we get mixes of the hottest women on earth and the best mix of foods anywhere.

Its hot, dirty, smoggy, brown-colored, full of traffic, and generally shitty-looking with a few gems here and there. Oh, and expensive.

LA has an amazing amount of variety. the problem is that its also massively sprawled, the traffic blows monkey chunks (unless you own a motorcycle), and the cost of living is stupidly high.

i used to live on Kelton near the campus. Apartments in the area are stupidly expensive, and its tough to drive anywhere. back in the nineties you could get instate residencey after a year, not sure about now.
