This is a new build for a friend using a mix of new parts and some confirmed working from the last build. New parts were cpu, motherboard, ssd, and vid card. Old parts were everything else. Case, power supply, ram, dvdrw, old mechanical sata hd. All the older parts are confirmed working cuz the older pc and working until I swapped parts a few mins ago. He has 2 front panel connectors, a card reader and usb extender, both have led lights that are on, so I know the mobo is getting power. I confirmed the ac cable is working, and switch on the back of the power supply is in correct position, the actual switch connection is properly seated on the motherboard too. Once I press the the power button nothing happens, other then the leds on front panel are red, and the green light on the dvdrw briefly blinks. Any ideas??????

You didnt tell us what CPU, what board, what video card, or what power supply you have. If a power supply is too small for the system, all you'll get is flashing LED's.

I'm guessing something is incorrectly hooked up. Might have got the reset and power connections crossed up or something. It shouldn't take too much power to just get the system to an idle state. Maybe the system does come on and you just don't have video?

Double check all connections and disconnect any nonessential stuff like front panel USB, sound etc. There are a couple different audio standards that are totally not compatible.

What did you expect to happen? Pressing the button briefly may put the computer into a sleep state depending on how it's configured.

You need to press and hold the button for several seconds to turn the computer off. I guess the secondary question is why are you not shutting it off through the OS?

Boomerang, I might be new here, but did you even read the OP's post? His computer won't even turn on.

Eskluxor,

I am wondering if you have the CPU power cable properly seated or even hooked up at all. Most newer motherboards come with an 8, 6, or 4 pin CPU connector, and sometimes more than one or a combination thereof. A missed cable or an improperly seated cable could be your problem. Re-check ALL of your cables and connections, and minimize peripherals at first. Sometimes it's the most simple things that cause these annoying problems...

Thanks for all the replies. Parts are as follows: amd fx6300, biostar TA970, cooler master 212 evo, 8gb mushkin ram, corsair gt90 ssd, msi 5450, corsair cx600 psu, lg dvdrw.

Triple checked cables and connectors, switched psu to a modular mushkin 530w and then back to the corsair. Tried the paperclip test on the corsair, passed. As it worked fine for 5 years prior to this build also. Next I switched cases, from an old full tower to a cooler master mid tower that housed another pc. So I gutted both cases put this new build in the cooler master, and it actually powered on, both cpu and psu fans worked, but no post or beeps.

So I removed every component, then put one in at a time and turned on the machine. No beeps, no post, no signal to the monitor from the video card, ever. I'm thinking it's gotta be the motherboard??

If I were you I would have tried to get it running when it actually turned on. If its not posting it could be a number of issues. Maybe RAM. Im thinking it's probably something simple you are overlooking. I would re-check everything again, and possibly put it together the same way when it actually powered up and troubleshoot from there. Most motherboards will not post if the RAM is installed improperly or isnt compatible with the motherboard. Try different slots or read the manaul for the correct slot to use. (probably A1) for one stick.

Wow, I have no explanation. I did read it, but how I flipped it around in my mind will remain a mystery.

Sorry OP.

Reset the CMOS per the instructions in the manual. In these situations this is always my first step. I have even seen boards fresh out of the box with the jumper placed incorrectly.

If no joy, remove the board from the case. Place it on the cardboard box it came in, or another non-conductive surface. Have only the CPU, one stick of RAM, the PS and a monitor connected. Short momentarily across pins 15 and 16 where the case switch was connected and see if it boots up. If not, switch to the other RAM stick and try again. You know the RAM is good, but just do this as a process of elimination. You can try both sticks at the same time if you wish too.

As radeson suggested, you hopefully have a RAM incompatibility problem. First see if Biostar has a compatibility chart at their website for your board. Unfortunately, there are so many manufacturers and specs that no list will be complete. In other words if it's not listed there, it's no smoking gun. If the RAM is Kingston or Crucial, you can find what RAM is compatible at their website. I build plain vanilla systems that do not push the envelope. I long ago started buying either Crucial or Kingston because I could make certain it was compatible through their websites.

If you can't verify if the RAM is compatible through those means, you're then between a rock and a hard place. Order what you know is compatible RAM or what? Me, I'd be contacting Biostar to see what they've got to say. If they can tell you that the RAM is compatible, you need to get an RMA going anyway.

I usually RMA through the manufacturer whenever I can versus the vendor I purchased from.
