Washington (CNN) – Furloughed jobs, interrupted services, and the potential economic ramifications aside, top Republican strategist Karl Rove is warning a government shutdown is likely to strengthen President Obama's hand as he heads into his reelection campaign.

"While the government shutdowns didn't jeopardize Republicans' hold on Congress, they helped President Clinton position himself for a successful 1996 reelection," concludes Rove. "President Obama's ratings as a strong leader have slipped this year…Republicans should be careful not to let him recover as he gears up for his 2012 reelection campaign."

Karl Rove agrees with the OP. The ball is in Repub's court now. Remove the stupid abortion rider and it gets approved. Or they can boost Obama's rating with a shutdown.

It's all a sideshow to avoid talking about reforming/cutting SS, Defense, and Healthcare where all the real money is being spent. Neither party wants to address this since they both run up against their base voting blocs .

All this angst over a few billion in discretionary spending is like doctors fretting over a scraped knee while the patent bleeds out of his femoral artery.

Well if we take a page from recent history... whenever the Republicans blocked a spending bill which contained unrelated amendments that they disagreed with, it was the Republicans' fault. (Party of NO!)

ALL of the issues have to do with the House not providing a clean bill to keep the government operating.

They're injecting political issues into a procedural matter.

It's the House's right to do so. But it's also their problem if people don't approve.

They'll cave. With or without a shutdown. So all the shutdown will do is waste money and inconvenience people.

The GOP didn't have a choice. Years of hate mongering led to the formation of the Tea Party which used economic issues to try and distinguish itself from the larger conservative community. Now the Tea Party is being painted as just promoting the traditional right wing extremist social agenda under the guise of economic reform. In doing so the GOP has weakened the Tea Party's strangle hold on their political agenda.
