On XP Pro boot, message about Registry data recovery

One of the files containing the system's Registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful.

I've been having a recurring problem for a couple of months. Often when I shut down the machine (I do this at least once a day), the PC fails to shut down properly and I get a locked mouse cursor on the Windows is shutting down screen and I have to either reset the machine or turn off the power strip into which my PC is plugged.

What is the significance of the message I got when Windows had finished booting (shown above)?

You had data corruption and Windows recovered. I'd start trying to track down that shutdown hang....

I don't really know how to do that. I guess maybe some trial and error, i.e. shut down programs one at a time. Would there maybe be clues in Event Viewer? Edit: I don't see anything in Event Viewer other than an unrelated warning about TCP/IP concurrent connect events.

Does the mouse actually hard lock? If so, id be looking at checking for updates for drivers as thats more likely a kernel issue then a user mode issue...

Yes, the cursor locks in one position on the screen and the system totally unresponsive to anything other than the reset button. That might be any driver at all? I haven't checked since last April or so when I bought my motherboard, a Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro Motherboard (NEW IN BOX). It's an old motherboard and I bought it because it has lots of slots, two COM ports and supports all my peripherals. I had various issues, in particular an inability to go into S3 suspend, but after I updated all the drivers I managed to get S3 suspend working. I haven't checked for newer drivers since, I suppose it's possible there is/are some.

Windows has two copies of every registry file:

system & system.alt
software & software.alt
etc..

It journals changes to the registry and if a change doesn't make it, it can flip back to the .alt version.

You basically came this || close to a 'missing or corrupt system\system32\config\..'
