Onboard NIC nonfunctional

A friends onboard NIC is no longer working on their computer. The NIC doesn't light up when a hot CAT5 is plugged into it and the computer just displays the "network cable is unplugged" pop up error. I have disabled and enabled the device, reinstalled the drivers and what ever else I could do to get it back up. But I am having no luck. I guess I can put in a 10/100 in the PCI slot, but I'd rather fix this issue.

Thanks

Is the onboard nic enabled in the BIOS? That would be the first thing to check. Then, what does the device manager say about the nic (assuming windows)? Maybe there's an IRQ conflict between devices.

If absolutely nothing works, a PCI nic is easy and very cheap to come by although I realize your desire to fix it if possible.

The nic is enabled in the bios and there are no IRQ conflicts. the device manager reports the nic are working, but i get a "media disconnected" error when i run ipconfig :/

Many Onboard NICs seem to have a very short life span.

Lucky for us it means that we lost $5, or 0$ after rebate.

Yeah. Its a frys special computer anyways. The while comp cost $200 and has an ecs motherboard. normally ecs motherboard are cheap yet durable. they wont oc or set any benchmarking standards, but they normally run well.

Since this isnt my computer I have no idea what went wrong with it. Also the CAT5e goes around the house to the room the computer is in. So you think with the CAT5 being outside that this could hard the nic in any way? I know the door has been shut on the CAT5 many of times bu the look of the cable, but the cable still seems to be in working order, just not the nic.

And I tested the nic out with the original cable connected to the router, the same cable recrimped connected to the same router and then a new cabled connected to a hub. So I'm sure its the NIC :/

tnx for your help ppl, I will pick up a spare 10/100 that i have at work on sunday.

No having a CAT5 cable outside won't do any real damage. I mean in extreme temperature you may want to consider an alternative, but it's not that bad. As for having it go between doors, I have mine doing through a door and it works fine. I mean just be careful and don't massacre it and you should be fine.

Yeah, integreated NICS aren't my cup of tea, PCI NICS all the way.

Unless its an Intel Gigabit 1000Pro on a CSA bus with TCP/IP checksum offloading enabled

Yeah, they are fine, unless you don;t like setting up makeshift lighting rods that run straight through your PC.

UTP outside or underground is a no no, not to mention that if you run it through heating sucts, the eventual fumes that will be released are toxic...

..but if you don't care about such things continue with the laissez-faire...
