Onboard sound problem

I just switched a sound blaster audigy 2 zs sound card into another pc and the pc that I removed the card from has no sound coming from it. I'm almost positive that there is onboard sound b/c when we first bought the pc, we didn't have the sound card and there was still sound. So, my question is, how do I get the pc to recognize and use the onboard sound?

No but the motherboard manufacturer will link you to the drivers. Or they will be on the CD that came with it.

It would be better to download the latest audio driver for your MB model.

First of, you may have the onboard audio disabled in BIOS. Refer to motherboard manual for more details or tell us what motherboard you have. Secondly, you may be missing UAA update if you're running Windows XP SP2 or earlier. Get XP Service Pack 3 which includes the update. (does not apply to Vista)

Thirdly, as suggested earlier, you may not have drivers installed. Check motherboard manual or datasheet to check what audio codec is in your motherboard. Then go find the latest drivers from codec manufacturer or motherboard manufacturer if the codec manufacturer does not offer drivers themselves.

I'll have to look for the install cd later, can't find it. My mobo is a socket 478 intel that gateway put in their mainstream pc's about 6 yrs ago... I couldn't find a model # on the board. I downloaded an ADI soundmax driver b/c I thought that's what s478 intel mobos used, but it must have been an update only because it said I needed a driver installed already. I guess that confirms I do need the drivers though. Any reliable sites for downloading drivers?

Gateway is great for their support... Type in the S/N and you're reading to download

Enable Onboard Sound in BIOS.
Download & Install drivers from Gateway.

If you still can't find them use...
http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php

...and find which audio chipset you have and download the drivers for it.

alright, wow that gateway site is really helpful. I fixed it and the sound is now working fine.
As a side note, is the sound blaster audigy 2 zs any better than the onboard sound of, say, a new foxconn mobo with hd audio?
